I don't think anyone knows for certain that after the introduction of the
TC/EXU all TCs exported to the US were EXUs. However I'd say that your
non-EXU 1949 with the "Made In England" plate probably was intended for
some other market, possibly Canada since that's where you are.
Do you know anything about the car's history? That's the best clue. Cars
intended for export often had equipment that differed from Home Model
equipment to suit the motor vehicle regulations in the intended market
(lighting, and KPH speedometers, for example). Trouble is, even if if
your car was originally sold in France (yellow headlamps, KPH speedo), if
it has been in Canada or the US for many years, chances are good that the
country-specific equipment has been replaced by equipment more suitable
for the US or Canada. Unless the car has not been altered in any way
since it left the factory, how it is equipped 50 years later isn't a very
good way to determine what market it was originally intended for.
