Re: Badges
The number of compliments I've received - both through the list and off
list - is overwhelming, and I'm very pleased that so many of you are
enjoying them. I'm taking this means of acknowledging your e-mails in a
somewhat impersonal fashion, but it is nonetheless meant to reach each of
you to thank you for all of your kind remarks and expressions of enjoyment.
Just to clarify a couple of points... yes, I designed the badge, selected
the
vendor and ramrodded the technical implementation through the sample phase.
However, Jim, who is anxious to pass on the credit for the project to me,
was chiefly responsible for the initial push for an MG-TABC badge in the
first place, and for
"growing" the list to a size that made it possible at all. Further, he laid
out the funds in advance for the badges so that the project would meet the
rather stringent requirements of a somewhat obstreperous vendor, which I
knew (and told Jim)was somewhat risky business from the less-than-pleasant
price vs. quality negotiations that I had experienced. However, Jim plunged
ahead anyway with a substantial outlay in order to eliminate further delays
for all of you. He took on the job of collecting the funds, doing the
final inspection, and shipping them out. So, I'm happy to share your kind
remarks with this neat guy, who, together with Walter, got this great group
together in the first place and continues to lead us all in such a healthy
direction.
Two questions that still remain:
1) The mounting nuts are 8-32 thread for a pair of user-supplied studs. I
should have punched this out again before the badges were shipped. This is
standard for some badges (not all - I believe that NEMGT uses it as well as
others), and requires a stainless or other bracket that clamps to the badge
bar with another bolt or two, and which should be drilled with two holes for
the 8-32 screws that are vertically spaced at 2" apart. I had the option of
adding a tab to the bottom of the badge, but I felt that the changed shape
and exposed screw heads would detract from our "sacred octagon" outline, and
also because the vendor wanted extra bucks at the eleventh hour to include
it, which wasn't part of the deal. I hope that you agree that the octagon
will stand out properly if the badge is mounted slightly in front of the
bracket by giving the bracket a slight "z" offset (1/4" or so) to project it
forward of the bar. If anyone has trouble with my description, I'll be
happy to email a small jpeg sketch of a bracket off list. Perhaps Skip
Kelsey or someone else can supply an appropriate bracket.
2) Some of you have requested the name of the vendor. I have mixed
feelings about this, because of the problems I had during the negotiations,
which started in February. Left to the vendor, the spokes in the design as
well as the radiator slats, etc., would have been eliminated, and the tires
would have been solid black, fewer colors overall, etc. In other words, the
badge might well have ended up a bland Terry-Toons cartoon (no pun here,
TA).
I will be happy to furnish the grisly details (OFF-LIST ONLY) to anyone that
needs badges for other clubs, together with the appropriate negotiating
cautions. The factory (in Taiwan) is clearly capable of producing quality
work at a reasonable price, but the buyer has to know something about the
manufacturing process and what can and cannot be done. Anticipating the
question, no, I don't want to get involved with other club badges. I spent
my life in design, but I'm retired, and just can't find enough time in the
day... but I'd be happy to help with any tips or suggestions should anyone
need them to get things done right.
Again, thank you for choosing my design and for your comments. Enjoy your
badges, and don't let them get dented. You're only a couple of feet behind
them.

Austin:
I just returned from a two week cruise in the Mediterranean to find a superb
T-ABC badge burried in about two feet of mail. A beautiful job. Thanks to both
you and Jim for another job well done
