The Gilbern was made in Wales with a Dragon on the badge. Early cars had a MGA engine box and back axle Later cars had MGB engine box and back axle Last cars had Ford engine and box and I think an MGC back axle The MGC used Girling Ford Granada brake components was this a bitsa? There is a good Gilbern owners website if anyone wants further details I think the Tortoise was the badge of the Gordon Keeble made in Eastleigh near Southampton. While we are on the British auto industry and who cares I would like to point out that the Midlands Car Industry and most of the older relations of the people who are now looking for jobs set up the car industries in most of the world. Even in Australia where there was a BMC plant. Datsun and BMW made Austin 7 cars under licence and most of the British manufacturers sold old designs on to less developed countries the list goes on. Today most of Formula 1 cars and the USA Indy 500 etc cars are still made in the UK and all due to the heritage and skills of the generations of workers at Austin, Morris, Riley, Wolseley, Standard, Triumph, Sunbeam, Hillman, Talbot MG etc etc . Generations of knowledge has and is now being wiped away. The only hope is that the small MG part of the company not the badge engineered Rovers will be sold to some company who values this. I dislike the looks of the MGSV but there is a little hope there. Or am I thinking of a Gordon-Keeble? Come on! It was forty years ago, after all! And they do both start with a "G"! Aubrey is right, virtually all the problems with British industry have been caused by management: all those striking workers in the past had not created the conditions they were forced to work under, they were only reacting to them... Contrast Abingdon, which had the best industrial relations in the whole of Britain (never ONE strike!) and despite the archaic production lines, actually had the BEST productivity!!! There is a classic photo in one of the books ("Insomnia Crew"?) showing a board chalked up with a league table of all the BMC factories, with Abingdon top. And it was all because of great labour relations, from the top down. Let us all hope, against hope, that a rescue package can be put together for M.G. - after all the ZR is (or rather was...) the best selling car in the whole MG-Rover range, due to the buying power of all those 20 & 30-somethings who want a hot-hatch. And they are, hopefully, the ones who will take over the guardianship of OUR cars one day! Happy Motoring TCRoger, Devon, Olde England (where, true to form, it is damp & drizzly - what happened to Spring?) "scooter19392003" rockdctr@hotmail.com> wrote:

Don't hold your breath for a rescue of MG. The hardtop on my Triumph Stag still sports a sticker saying "Save MG" which I put on the last time! Regards to all. Ian Linton TA 3120 ...oh, and the Stag
