Benny,

My original master cylinder was 66 years old and had stood in a damp garage for 48 years. The rust inside was minimal, only slight surface rust. The bore was corroded which is why I replaced it. The water that gets into brake fluid is absorbed into the fluid and will cause rust if allowed to build up. However changing the fluid every two years, which is a manufactures recommendation will stop the problem. Whilst the rubber components will withstand high temperatures, constant heat will cause the rubber to go hard earlier than it would otherwise do. The high temperatures are not constant unless it’s a race car.

I’d rather change the fluid every two years than rebuild master cylinders.

Consider the tradeoff -  rust in the main brake cylinder  or replacing the rubber parts every five years or more.

On the TC the main brake cylinder is the lowest part of the brake system. water will accumulate especially when the car is not driven  frequently.

Brake system rubber will withstand 100 deg. C  . The original heat shield will protect the brake oil container from direct heat radiation.

The change of the brake oil every two years is a good idea In the same time is possible to turn to 5.1 DROP (that is compatible with 4 and 3 DROP Brake fluids) with more heat resistance (over300 Celsius) increasing the TC performance on the hard and long downhill

Clive,Good advice. For years the US military bought into silicone brake fluid on grounds that it didn't absorb water. At some time wiser heads prevailed when it became apparent costs of R & R rusted systems vastly exceeded cost of changing glycol fluid on 3k schedule or when test strips showed "X" degree of water contamination.  BillTC 4926Odessa, Fl. Putting an heat shield on the reservoir is not a good idea. The original heat shield allowed some heat from the exhaust muffler to reach the oil container ..

The original shield should be kept.

Norman,

Test strips are available to determine amount of water contamination, so a decision can be made as to when to flush fluid. Phoenix also offers strips to identify type of fluid in system and strips to test for copper contamination from copper leaching out of  copper infused brake lines. http://www.brakebleeder.com/products/brake-fluid-testing/brake-fluid-corrosion-report-card/, and http://www.brakebleeder.com/product-category/brake-fluid-testing/

The bottom side of Ol' 5122's floorboards are skinned with a thin sheet of Aluminum. Purpose to prevent the floorboards from soaking up oil and becoming fuel, but in addition to being easy to keep clean, it reflects much of the heat from the exhaust pipe. I haven't found a downside yet, but won't be surprised if someone of this group will show me at least one. Bill,

When I used to do seminars for dealers on how to run profitable workshops one of my points was “how many of you sell the changing of brake fluids every two years” It’s a manufacturers recommendation but very few garages do it. They do however complain they can’t get enough work nowadays with cars needing a service once a year,

Norman,

Test strips are available to determine amount of water contamination, so a decision can be made as to when to flush fluid. Phoenix also offers strips to identify type of fluid in system and strips to test for copper contamination from copper leaching out of  copper infused brake lines. http://www.brakebleeder.com/products/brake-fluid-testing/brake-fluid-corrosion-report-card/, and http://www.brakebleeder.com/product-category/brake-fluid-testing/

Benny
