Hi all, In Horizontal I cannot view the left mirror sitting normally in the drivers seat. It will only work in the vertical position which is not what the original request was. No I am not tall and I should not have to bend the shaft of a new mirror to make it work. I installed it in England and drove to St Petersburg, Mongolia and then to Beijing. Within that six month period there were rust spots appearing and by the time the car was shipped back to NZ the Moss mirror needed re-chroming. The older right hand side minor was OK and does not require re-chroming even now. I do not consider the atmosphere in those regions of the Planet are any more corrosive than anywhere else.MarkNZ

Many thanks all, a lot of food for thought. I may see if I can get the ones I ve got re-chromed as the chrome is peeling off where I had to bend the arms. If not I ll talk to Mike at NTG and see if his will be OK.

Thanks all,

Norman, I had the same problem.  Rather than buy another mirror I cut off the arm and drilled and tapped the base to fit a longer length of stainless bar bent to fit.  It has worked for 20 years now.

    Hi Norman
There have been a few UK suppliers over the years though a few few the plating was poor and certainly not chrome over brass. I have acquired a couple of pairs for the YT and for the TC. Two were kindly given to me the others I bought from Paul Beck  Vintage Supplies. Holden in Worcestershire also sell them (both at 104.00). I have the easy fit side mirror bracket (from Moss) which are okay and probably Holden sell.them too. There is a firm I noticed on the net - MG Parts and Spares who also sell them ( 120.00) though I have no experience of them.
You are absolutely right about the need to be able to position the mirrors horizontally. Jo and I took the YT to Portugal this month and although there wasnt much traffic the l/h side mirror was essential. They can be problematic when the sidescreens are up and you want to get in/out of the car!
On the YT the original Desmo mirror is fitted on the dashboard. Useless. So e
I used the spare 160.. Excellent view!

I have attached a pic of the 160s on the YT.
    Cheers

I thought that two holes were used specific for the mirror not one of the stantion fixings. Maybe it's in the wrong position to turn. Neil Sent from my iPad

    Neil,

There are brackets who’s holes line up with the stantion holes. However the brackets I bought didn’t so I drilled and tapped another hole.

I’ve almost decided, maybe, that I’ll get these arms, where the chrome has peeled off due to the bending, re-chromed. It can wait until winter so it’s been added to the winter jobs,

    Thanks all.

Not pretty, but effective. I stuck one of those round, concave, adjustable, plastic mirrors from the Walmart onto the top left corner of my windshield. It works so well that I removed the Lucas mirror, which was too hard to see.

Attachments : Has anybody checked the mirrors that are used on motorcycles. They are all sizes shapes and lengths of shaft. Some of them have a shaft with  just a threaded end. I have used them on MG/TC/TD/TF without any modifications Install them through the slot that the windscreen pivots on. Two nuts and two washers are all that is needed. Two minutes to remove if you wish to lower the windshield. The ones that I have seen are all stainless steel,

Plus they stay far enough forward to clear side curtains

This way there is no drilling needed.

    Sandy.

I should have been more explicit and accurate about the stick-on mirrors. They are available in the US at any generic parts store or parts dept.
    They are convex, not concave.
Mine is labeled 3 inch, Wide Angle, proudly made in Taiwan by "K source."
    No chrome to complain about.
