Peter of World Wide Imports in Madison, WI tells me my front shocks can not be rebuilt. I, therefore, need a pair of shock absorbers for TC 1712. I have new links and pins and the old arms are apparently reuseable. I would be interested in either a pair of rebuilt shocks or a pair of cores that can be rebuilt. This is the last remaining item in a three year restoration. Everything else, except the installation of the top and side curtains, is finished.

Before you loose hope read the section on shock rebuild in the tech section of the list. Its worth a try especially since your expert says it can't be done. I did mine several years ago and they are still working with nary a leak. Jim

Hi Group,
What to do with tired shockabsorbers. Is it possible to put in new rubber seals between the arm and the body? Mine are looking damaged. Where can those seals be obtained?Of course I will change the bushes as well. Thanks Marek

Marek,
I can supply new lip seals but in my experience once the old seals have
perished not only do they let the fluid out, they also let dirt in. The
result is that the shafts get heavily scored. Once this happens new lip
seals will not solve the problem. Examine the shafts. If they are scored
they may need to be replaced too. That's a much bigger deal.
The original seals consisted of two 1/4inch thick rubber 'washers' which
together sealed on a much larger area of the shaft. More like a bung than a
seal. I'm not sure these are available today.

Send them to WORLD WIDE AUTO PARTS in Madison Wisconsin and have them
rebuilt. Their guaranteed not to leak for life and you never have to worry

Per instructions from Bob Grunau, I replaced my seals with SKF 8645 from
NAPA. Apple Hydraulics will sell you the gaskets. Ones for the top cover are
$3 apiece. Talk to Lazar. There's about 6 pages of instructions on
rebuilding the Girling's somewhere in this website. If you can't find it,
e-mail me separately and I'll try to get it for you.

I rebuilt mine based on the instructions onf the TABC site, a fun project. One suggestion, fit two seals into each side as there should be room. The seal I used was a National 340413, maybe available from many sources and probably less cost then NAPA.
