Hi Jim,
I have recently rebuilt my rear ends...and I went to the trouble and carrried out the
"Bob Scharple" (I think that's how its spelt) modification..( I think its mentioned in the Muke Sherril book) anyway the point is to get the large nut undone I make up a tool out of a piece of pipe and it worked well, yes as Mike says you must get the outer hub up tight so that the axle does not flex under load and then you don't get any oil leaks on to brakes...but the mod does also help because with the mod you insert a oil seal...(well out of sight).
Sorry can't help anymore but I am away in Antarctica and don't have books or car ro refer too. (A phone call to Mike Sherrill would get you straight)

Happy TC ing
Morris

According to TCs Forever, some shims might be needed to "pinch up" the outer rear wheel bearing race. These would be required if the hub flange is too short to hold the bearing race in place in its housing. Anyone know of a source for some of these shims? None are shown in the Abingdon Spares or Moss catalogs.

Many thanks for the input Roger. I'll forward your advice to my friend who owns the TC we are working on. It needs lots of work but our philosophy is to fix it once in a given area and fix it right so it has a better chance of lasting. By the way, where are you located? Jim Merz
