Re: Fabric question
I have the Robbins Stayfast material on my 1954 Jag roadster and it is great

When I bought my TC, back in 1987, it came with a brand new hood and a
brand-new full tonneau. They were in the box, made by Robbins in Santa
Monica in 1982, according to the markings on the rear window. They seem to
be made of tan "Stayfast". Two years ago, I got tired of getting wet, so my
neighbour and I installed the hood. Bought a new piece of wood for the
windscreen header, and just followed the instrutions I got off the technical
site here on TABC Register.
I am well-pleased with the hood (tonneau's still in the box. It is a single
layer, seems waterproof, and was easy to install. It looks good, save for
the fact that the rear window is too large.
The car also came with Robbins side screen covers, which I will install
whenever I get time. They did not have provision for stiffening the signal
flap area, so I took the stiffening out of my old screens, and had a local
upholstery shop duplicate the stiffening in the new sidescreens.
Just thought some of you might be interested, as I believe you can still get
the hood, etc. from Robbins.

Hi Ross, I have just this morning picked up a new tonneau AND hood for TC
2259...( no I have`nt just won the lottery..).... from Brown & Gammons here
in the UK. The items on the car at the moment seem to be of a heavy canvas
material and I know the car went to the USA for a number of years and I
think they were possibly made there. I did ask a local upholsterer what the
chances were of getting similar material but his advice was to go for a
`Double Duck` off-the-shelf replacement on the grounds of the cost of having
to buy a minimum amount of canvas and the `modern` stuff would probably do
the job better. It`s your car and of course you can do what you wish but I
would`nt replace your vinyl with more of the same....I don`t think it was
around when your car was made....or was it?...no doubt there will be someone
on the list who knows about these things. Just for the record the two items
cost 425.75....plus 74.51 tax !!!!!!... I have`nt even taken them out of
the bag yet so they
could be total c--p....watch this space... All the best.

O Sages of the List,
TC 3528 (Persephone) requires a new toneau and, in the not TOO distant
future, a new hood and side curtains. She is not a trailer queen and is
rather rough around the edges so concours quality is not an issue. What is
the conventional wisdom on fabrics and vendors.
I've toyed with the idea of having the existing bits (all vinyl) duplicated
by a local upholstery specialist I've dealt with in the past.
I await the list's collected wisdom.
