For what it s worth: Brown and Gammons in UK sells a heat shied made of asbestos and metal that helps (somewhat) lower fuel temperatures. It helped my TCEXU. Chief drawback is expense. I think it was about 50$ . Check out their website if interested. Dick Warren in usually cold Vt so less of a problem.

Dear Bill, That sounds like an ingenious idea!  Did you devise it as a direct result of experiencing the hot-start problem with modern fuels? Is the 6 psi pump a calculated pressure or a guesstimate that seems to work?   When you mention Lucas pump, do you mean the SU? The TC has only one fuel pipe from the tank (no reserve system) but I guess if a banjo connection could be fitted into the drain bung hole a return line could be achieved that way. One concern would be that there would be too much pressure in the line causing the float chambers to flood. Also that there would not be enough pressure in the line to overcome the head of fuel in a full tank so the return line could not flow back in. And it doesn't overcome the problem that vaporisation would occur in the carbs and pipes due to the heat from the engine when stopped. But I suppose that the colder fuel being pumped up from the tank would overcome this. Has anyone else done this - I would be very interested in comments on this modification. Finally - what model of Porsche do you have with an 8 cylinder engine? My recollection is that a few were flat fours and the rest flat sixes until a few V8s were introduced.  Unless, of course, you have a racer or prototype. Cheers,Roger[b] [/b][b] [/b][b] [/b][b]Hi Roger. A fuel ring will be found on most new cars. It is there to provide fuel at a constant temperature and pressure. Fuel injection systems require a precise amount of fuel for the combustion to be proper. A change to either will have an adverse effects on the efficient burning of the fuel and there by cause both power loss and failure to meet current emission standards. Not too meaningful for our early cars, but mandatory for modern cars. The lesson that comes from this is the fact that fuel needs to be at a constant pressure and temperature, or as close to, to burn efficiently. That is also the problem with our cars, as the hotter the fuel, the more likely the issue of vapor issues. On my early Porsche the way they solved the injection problems, was to go the a high pressure ( 28 PSI ) and to provide a fuel ring to accomplish that. The fuel from the tank is pressurized to 28 PSI using a high pressure pump, that keeps a ring connected to all 8 cylinders at proper injection pressure, then returning the unused fuel back the the tank, where it becomes a part of a larger volume that would be a an ambient temperature, not that of a hot engine compartment. In the case of my TA that has two fuel lines to the firewall for the fuel pump to select the normal ( N ) or reserve ( R ) to supply fuel to the pump and on to the carbs. The modification is to provide a loop that supplies fuel from the pump to the first carb, then to the second carb, then to one of the two lines back to the tank. The Lucas fuel pump can not supply fuel to the loop at approximately 6 PSI that the loop requires to keep fuel pressure and flow to meet the requirement of pressure of 2 PSI for the float bowl and flow rate to keep cooler fuel in the loop. The TC has the same two lines from the tank, so the hard part is satisfied. The panel fuel N/R valve is modified to provide pass through on one of the choices and block the other ( in other words, the valve is not used ) I use a 6 PSI electric pump at the tank to accomplish the pressure to meet the flow rate and I remove the flapper discs in the Lucas pump to provide a through put[/b][b]for flow.[/b] [b]I live at almost 6,000 feet elevation here in Colorado and drive the car in very hot weather, at elevations up to 14,000 feet with no issues. Hi Roger. I have been through all of the suggestions so far and I can say that most will not solve the problem. I number of years ago I modified the fuel system with a fuel ring that keeps the fuel flowing, thereby solving the fuel heat problem, that is the primary issue for solving hot starts. For what it s worth.....Bill with a 1937 MG TA currently showing 110,000 miles on the clock.

I have made a carburettor float bowl "Koozies"   it is made of a special heat reflecting material and is held on to the float bowls with "Velcro" and while they have not solved the issue of vapor lock 100% it has helped quite a lot. For me a new coil and condenser produced a huge improvement. Did I read that high under-bonnet temperatures cause coil insulation to break down?  However, the really big change came when I had the radiator re-cored. I, too, have installed an auxiliary Facet pump. I mounted it on the frame, below the passengers door. It has greatly helped with the hot start problem, but has not totally eliminated it. I try not to shut down the hot engine for a 2 to 10 minute period on a hot day.
Bonus, no fuel pump break-downs.

Back in 63 at Daytona 24 (race where  Dan Gurney in an expired Lotus 19 stopped just short of finish line at top of banking & at stroke of 24 hours pushed or used starter to head down hill & cross finish line & win event). We had pit next to Jim Clark in Hobbs-o-Matic  Lotus Elite. The Elite had succumbed to vapor lock at stop & Chapman was at wits end to get going again. We loaned them a Co2 extinguisher & they hosed down fuel system from pump to carbs. JC hit starter & was off in a flash. Totally marveled at JC s skill. -Bill HyattSent from my iPhone

I had vapor lock on my TD it went away when I mounted a MGB style pump in the rear and left the original pump on  the firewall with elec wire disconnected. Joe, Long ago, living on Dartmoor in deep midwinter's ice and mists, the TB's carbs had a habit of freezing up first off, until the engine got hot enough. No problem, the engine sort of spluttered, stalled and died. I was about the only fool who drove about in that weather way back then, so one just pulled into the side of the road beside a sheep or something, waited for a couple minutes whilst the carbs warmed up and the ice melted, then drove happily on without further trouble. Joyce, being mechanically sympathetic, took pity and produced a pair of nicely knitted Carb Warmers to help the poor things through their misery ! They looked good which is more than I can say for the pair of socks I later got in the same wool !) but did nothing to stop the icing up. :-- [img]cid:ii_jvfbgvjs0[/img] I suppose the sheep was impressed though. I paid attention to the presentation at the MG Car Club Rebuild last year and read the write-up carefully in Totally T Types 2, but I still haven t cracked it. I have an MGB fan, new high capacity water pump, overhauled engine, electronic ignition, decent radiator, correct mixture and timing, and a state of flummoxedness. I now leave the bonnet open when I park, carb side, to help the heat dissipate. From what I have read, it is heat from the cylinders travelling back and heating up the carbs causing vaporisation, rather than underbonnet ambient temps generally. Anyone got any ideas to overcome?
