Re: Electrical Fuel Pump

When I rebuilt/restored TC2911 some years ago, I did not really touch the SU pump other than a good cleaning.  Several years later a pal and I were out on a 100 mile run and low and behold the car lost power and we coasted to the side of the road.  Being the astute mechanic that I am, I noticed the pump had quit ticking so pulled out the trusty knock off hammer and a light tap  got us going again in short order.  Another tap or two completed the journey and a new set of points were ordered from Doug Pelton and installed and all has been well since.  As far as demon ethanol, and we have had it in our fuel for years and years in Ohio and it has caused no issues with any of my old cars nor my lawn mower.Steve TC2911 From: "Steve S mail@mgnuts.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: 'MGTABC GROUP' mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, June 18, 2018 12:57 PM Subject: Re: RE: [mg-tabc] Electrical Fuel Pump   I fitted an electronic conversion SU from a well known rebuilder to an MGB, and it didn't last.  Points pumps have proven very reliable for me. I have them fitted to four cars including my daily driver. The one in my TC has been in there since 1980 with no maintenance and is still going strong, although I'm sensing it's time for a rebuild. - Steve Simmons, TC8975

The SU electric pump is very reliable if maintained. The points need cleaning and adjusting every couple of years, just as the points in a distributor do. It s lack of this maintenance that cause failure.  My pump body was so corroded it fell apart (broke) when I tried to strip it down. I had to get a modern electronic replica which failed in 3 months. It s replacement has been OK for 21 months but I will always have fears about it.    Norman Verona11 Cherry Close, Royston, South Yorkshire S71 4LZPhone: 0044 (0)1226 728811Mob: 0044 (0)741 9905 741Web: www.frenchblat.com  From: mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> On Behalf Of Bruce Doran Veevers bruce@mbssales.ca [mg-tabc] Sent: 18 June 2018 00:37 To: MGTABC GROUP mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Subject: [mg-tabc] Electrical Fuel Pump    I have been considering rebuilding my existing pump and a spare... My MGB had an aftermarket inline electric pump when I bought it 25 years ago. When the electronic SU pumps came out I installed one, thinking it would end my fuel pump fears forever. Fortunately, I left the inline pump just in case and installed a switch to select which pump I wanted to use. To my surprise, the electronic pump acted like a conventional pump with bad points. It will run fine for days, then stop dead. If you give it a soft whack (inconvenient to do in an MGB) it will run again. Sounds like a loose connection, but it must be internal because I ve checked it when it s stopped and it has power and a good ground. I ve discovered that if I switch to the inline pump for a few miles, the electronic SU will heal itself.

I ve run an MGA for almost 50 years on the original SU and a TC with the original for 25 years. Clean the points every few years and change them every 10 years or so they work fine. I don t plan on buying another electronic pump.

I fitted an electronic conversion SU from a well known rebuilder to an MGB, and it didn't last.  Points pumps have proven very reliable for me. I have them fitted to four cars including my daily driver. The one in my TC has been in there since 1980 with no maintenance and is still going strong, although I'm sensing it's time for a rebuild.

New points are available from Burlen Services and now have twin contacts .. but are a direct replacement.

I now run a solid state version and carry the old one as a spare, but a bit surprised to hear you had a problem with your electronic one Norm.  Was it just a rogue one or are there other instances of them failing?  I thought they were supposed to bullet proof.

Bruce,

If the body of you existing pump is good then I would advice rebuilding it.

I have been considering rebuilding my existing pump and a spare... It is now being suggested that I put an electric one in line under the car out of sight Sent from my iPhone
