Re: Strength of stainless bolts
Guys, Let s not paint all S/S alloys with the same brush & add to urban legends. A-2 S/S is comparable to USA type 302/304 in corrosion resistance, A-4 is comparable to USA type 316 in corrosion resistance. For higher strength, fatigue resistance, more durable & tougher S/S fasteners do not overlook ARP s:Stainless300 @ 140k psi YS, & 170k-190k psi UTS. Their Custom 450 S/S is rated at 150k psi YS & 170k-190k psi UTS. Suitable for Head bolts & other applications requiring greater than Grade 8 fasteners.ARP Chrome Moly bolts = 180k psi YSZ & 190 UTS. Then there are 17-4 PH & XM-19 series S/S bolts for applications requiring > mechanical properties & corrosion resistance that are widely used in the Marine Industry Grade 5 bolts are MOL 90k psi YS, & 120k psi UT, Grade 8 are MOL 120k psi YS, & 150k psi UTSBoth ARP S/S grades are stronger in YS & UTS than Grade 5 & 8, ranging from 13% to 55% >, more comparable to 10.9 Class or >, i.e. more.

Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] Strength of stainless bolts Yep Roger, I stand corrected, although most sites offering SS fasteners list them according to their equivalency to Grade 3, 5, 8.8, 10.9 etc... McMaster Carr who is arguably one of the most common hardware suppliers in the States offers SS hardware in 18-8 Hardness B74 Tensile 70,000psi, 316 Hardness B70 Tensile 70,000psi, Alloy 20 Hardness B80 Tensile 80,000psi, A286 hardness C24 Tensile 130,000psi, HS 17-4PH Hardness C28 Tensile 130,000psi and 410 Hardness Grade 5 equiv The Grade 8 or better equivalent SS hardware typically is not in open stock but is specialty order to mainly the Chemical Industry where high corrosion resistance is required along with high strength. Ref: SAE Grade 8 bolt capability in yield (stretch) = 130,000 lbs / in2 , SAE Grade 8 bolt capability in tension (failure) = 150,000 lbs / in2, SAE Grade 5 bolt capability in yield (stretch) = 92,000 lbs / in2, SAE Grade 5 bolt capability in tension (failure) = 120,000 lbs / in2 Metric Class 8.8 tension 110,000psi , Metric Class 10.9 Tension = 150,000psi, Metric class 12.9 Tension = 174,000psiI wonder if there is a document available that gives the BSW/BSF head markings/strength identification by location on our cars and likewise the mad metric head markings by location on the mechanicals as well. That would be interesting as a comparison tool. Bottom line availability says that for low to medium strength applications SS is a viable option at the owners discretion...All others better to be safe than sorry.... Re: Strength of stainless bolts
SS hardware is notorious for causing galvanic corrosion to aluminum, steel and cast iron base metals that it is threaded into. General rule is no SS into any alum alloy. The SS bolts that can be heat treated to be just as strong as SAE Grade 8 bolts are 410, 416, 420 and 431, but they also are of the type SS most corrosive to steel, cast iron and aluminum.

Re: Strength of stainless bolts
Bill,
Are all of these SS specs available at ACE hardware? In the SS section? Just wondering....:}
Not likely, but McMaster Carr probably has some of them I bet.....

A-2 S/S is comparable to USA type 302/304 in corrosion resistance, A-4 is comparable to USA type 316 in corrosion resistance. For higher strength, fatigue resistance, more durable & tougher S/S fasteners do not overlook ARP s: Stainless300 @ 140k psi YS, & 170k-190k psi UTS. Their Custom 450 S/S is rated at 150k psi YS & 170k-190k psi UTS. Suitable for Head bolts & other applications requiring greater than Grade 8 fasteners. Ref: SAE Grade 8 bolt capability in yield (stretch) = 130,000 lbs / in2 , SAE Grade 8 bolt capability in tension (failure) = 150,000 lbs / in2, SAE Grade 5 bolt capability in yield (stretch) = 92,000 lbs / in2, SAE Grade 5 bolt capability in tension (failure) = 120,000 lbs / in2 Metric Class 8.8 tension 110,000psi , Metric Class 10.9 Tension = 150,000psi, Metric class 12.9 Tension = 174,000psi I wonder if there is a document available that gives the BSW/BSF head markings/strength identification by location on our cars and likewise the mad metric head markings by location on the mechanicals as well. That would be interesting as a comparison tool. Bottom line availability says that for low to medium strength applications SS is a viable option at the owners discretion...All others better to be safe than sorry....
I don't think you will find stainless steel bolts in strength grades, only as A2 or A4, which refers to their corrosion resistance. SS is banned (don't know if it is actually enshrined in EU law) from being used in any safety related situations: apart from lack of ternsile strength it also suffers from work-hardening (maybe John Kallend can tell us more about this - are you there John?). On our cars, the only obvious places to use them are holding the running-boards, and in places where a chrome-plated brass screw was used originally (such as the dashboard). Polished SS looks as good as chrome and will never tarnish. FYI I keep good stocks of every bolt and stud used on our cars in zinc-plated HT steel and some SS. ocTagonally Roger On Fri, Nov 24, 2017 at 9:31 AM, 'M. I would add that if your UK supplier does not state the type or grade of SS they are selling you thst the hardware is pretty much for holding panel in place or as decorative hardware. There are different grades of SS in different strengths but no ally you won't find anything better than a grade 5. Grade 8 is available but limited in availability and selections. If I were you, I'd tend to follow Norm's advice. Re: Strength of stainless bolts
I agree with Norman On stress locations H grade steel must be used.Esplicationhttps://www.pilotsofamerica.com/community/threads/why-cadmium-plated-bolts-rather-than-stainless-s
Stainless Steel Bolt AN6C (3/8 - 24) On Wicks Aircraft SupplyThis is the better grade that I have find-limited choice and NO idea of the costs
there are also the TITANIUM Aircraft Engine Bolts | Stanley Engineered Fastening
I have it on my oldest 72 Porsche 911S 5 BOLTS on the four wheels (lot of stress)weight similar to the plastic compounds

Re: Strength of stainless bolts
Ace may not have then identified as to material and spec details. Certainly will not have the selection or quantities you may want. McMaster Carr has all except the high strength selections . Only prplem is that you are stuck with their quatitiy packaging. You may want only 10 pcs but have to tske 25.

I agree with you Norman. Funny how all the people who are still so interested in strength of various grade SS fasteners will not say where
they think use of SS bolts would be better than the original type, or why.

SS bolts increase corrosion. The bolt itself does not rust, but the base metal (what it is threaded into) suffers dramatically increased Galvanic corrosion to the internal threads. The higher the grade strength SS, the worse the corrosion is. General rule is no SS bolts into alum alloy, but just as bad to use high strength (like 410) bolts into cast iron or steel.

I agree with you Norman. Funny how all the people who are
still so interested in strength of various grade SS
fasteners will not say where
they think use of SS bolts would be better than the original
type, or why.

Graham, Stainless steel is soft and
shouldn t be used on anything, like suspension or
steering
which requires high tensile steel strength. If you have
used SS fixing on
anything that takes load then I would strongly advise
you
change them for HS as soon as possible. Norman

Re: Strength of stainless bolts
Most cases I would think that would be OK.
