I have done the conversion, so know it is not easy. I asked about the "rumor" of longer than normal spindle spacers to be used with tapered bearings. Anyone know if it is just a rumor? Otherwise you must use a bunch of hard to find, odd sized shims, or make an extension. MGA shims don't work with stock sized spindles. I see Roger sells thick shims to get you started (shimming) and then much thinner ones to achieve a proper end float. No matter to me, as I made a fitted, single shim "extension" for use with each original spindle spacer, to be used with tapered bearings. Making these is not for the impatient or those with dull cutting tools. A link below is only for stock to make them. I did the tapered conversion a few years back to be used with new front hubs. I used the same supplier as in the link below, who is still offering standoff bushings or "arbor shims" in the correct diameters, and hard steel. 13/16" x 1 1/8" is an ideal size. Ideal size for shims, too. I created fitted single "shims" because I know better than stacking a bunch of shims for use in this application. That is why I would recommend Rogers "thick" shims, to reduce the total number of shims required. I have never used Roger's shims for this, but the fewer shims the better. http://www.ebay.com/itm/13-16-ID-X-1-1-8-OD-X-1-3-4-TALL-STEEL-SPACER-STANDOFF-BUSHING-2-PCS-/262934663906?hash=item3d382092e2:g:6ZUAAOSwMmBVsWss Note the bushing in above link is only used as "stock" to machine a small slice of that bushing for use with the stock spindle spacer and tapered bearings, as I mention above. To create a longer spindle spacer. Original and early replacement TC front hubs have a nasty tendency to become oval shaped and otherwise worn where the ball bearing should be a stiff press fit. Converting to tapered bearings and races will not fix the worn problem if you already have it. Very minor cases of wear there may be temporarily fixable with some loctite "bearing retainer" glue? I went with brand new hubs when I converted to tapered. Never to start an exchange on BC box vs not-stock box, but I will add that hubs that are worn where the bearings fit in will cause steering hell (all by itself) for any sort of box in a TC. Not so easy Duncan! The offset of the taper roller inner & outer races is 1.25mm, so you need at least 2.5mm worth of shims (funnily enough, it usually needs more than the theoretical 2.5mm). I stock 2mm & 0.5mm plus a selection of thin ones, plus the bearings, spacers and inner seal rings. ocTagonally Roger On Tue, Oct 3, 2017 at 11:13 AM, Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> wrote: The shims are easily made up at home using whatever thin material you have around. Any shape you like...............as long as it fits.By the way I did this conversion some years ago and believe me it is trial and error.  That said you are likely  to be looking around the garage for whatever you can use, not just buying shim stock from suppliers when it all comes down to it.Steve TC2911 From: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk> To: Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net>; Duncan morelists@yahoo.com>; "mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 3, 2017 3:32 PM Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] looking for bearing info ....  so what shape do these shims end up being after you've sourced, or rather sauced,  the raw material.  T.     From: "Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk>; Duncan morelists@yahoo.com>; "mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, 3 October 2017, 20:11 Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] looking for bearing info   an endless supply of shim stock.........Steve From: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk> To: Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net>; Duncan morelists@yahoo.com>; "mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 3, 2017 2:52 PM Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] looking for bearing info Ha, with all those beer cans it looks as though you manage to fill your time quite nicely :)    T.   From: "Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk>; Duncan morelists@yahoo.com>; "mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, 3 October 2017, 15:06 Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] looking for bearing info    I prefer to make my own, as like most of us, I am retired and need to fill my hours with productive endeavors.  Besides what else could I do with those empty beer cans in my recycle bin?Steve TC2911 From: Tweed lizandtweed@yahoo.co.uk> To: Stephen D Stierman morgan7709@sbcglobal.net>; Duncan morelists@yahoo.com>; "mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com" mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 3, 2017 7:27 AM Subject: Re: [mg-tabc] looking for bearing info That's true Steve, it's not rocket science to make a few shims .... but at the few pence they cost my time is worth more. Re: looking for bearing info

The steel cans that coconut water comes in at the grocery store make good general purpose thin steel stock. --------------------------------------------
