Well, Jan, here comes my poor English again...

The front wheels opened , i.e. the distance at the front of the wheels was 14 mm more than that at the back
I was told it is wrong and TB wheels should close of 4 mm and I have done this last friday.

The steering is much better and there are even times where I can take my hands off the steering-wheel and the TB remains straight.
There are also times when it still wanders a bit and I see 3 possible reasons :
1 / you don t hold the steering-wheel like on a modern car but let the car some freedom so it moves but you don t have to correct, increasing the wandering
2 / the TB is (very) side wind sensitive. Is she ?
3 / I fitted new Waymaster tyres (because they look very much like on the 1939 TB photo) and they squeal at every turn a little sharp, even at low speed.     Pressure is following the manual. Does it come from the tyres ot from sthg else ? Does the outside rubber length contribute ?
(I mean these tyres external sculptures semm very supple)
4 / is there a 4 ?

A little far from the boost gauge but your opinions most welcome, thanks

According to my Bentley manual toe-in should be set at 1/2".  Do the conversion to mm. and you should be correct.  I have set my TC to this spec and it drives very well. Good news, Phil, that I can hope to turn in silence some day!

Steve, 1/2 = 12,7 mm
I am quite happy with 4 mm but it is so easy I ll try 13.

Jean,

Eric is spot on, the final tell-tale indicator for correct alignment/pressure should be wear pattern, (assuming the Factory got their # s right) The Factory Spec. is for new vehicles w/o long term wear & tear, correct chassis alignment, type of tire in terms of its construction, material make-up, tread design, mentioned side wall suppleness, etc. The printed # s should just be considered a ball park guide with fine tuning derived from observing tread wear. Underinflated will show wear at sides, Overinflates will show wear at center crown of tire footprint (tire convex). See link https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=T9S%2brrO1&id=26D25128C252F8A335D31577831ECF7E6CC930CC&thid=OIP.T9S-rrO1IBEHIEOLKMNH9gEsDQ&q=reading+tire+wear.&simid=608009376193642516&selectedIndex=0&ajaxhist=0

As it is very tedious to keep steering alignment perfect long term car mfgrs. generally spec an allowable range or tolerance for specs. provided. This is why it is normally recommended to rotate tires on a regular basis,

evening out alignment anomalies as mileage accumulates.

Unfortunately for us, vintage tire makers have opted not to follow DOT requirements for DOT Certification & supply tires with virtually no wear capabilities insuring their overpriced tires are worn out prematurely at

20-30K miles. Most DOT rated daily driver tires with have a tread wear rating that results in a service life of 60-80k miles with little shortfall in wet or dry stickiness . Very distressing. & perhaps cause to opt for 16 wheels so modern DOT rated high wear, high performance can be used.

Can anyone postulate why vintage tire suppliers cannot provide tires with modern tread compounds & designs that meet at least minimum DOT requirements to achieve DOT Certification? Personally I do not buy into any explanation based of added cost of the anti-wear/traction additives vs. low volume production costs. These tires are pricy enough to cover these ingredient costs.

Thanks, Gene

The TB was 5/16 toe-out (1,4 mm) and much better now at 3/16 toe-in (4 mm) (I am sure of the figures in mm!) I ll try more toe in, up to 1/2 and see. Jean

Bonjour JeanFor a number of years my TB was not very good at holding a straight line, eventually I decided to check the toe in and there was none. I adjusted it but can't remember now by how much, it made a big difference to driving the car but sometimes at very low speeds the front would start to judder, I backed off the toe in a little and the car is still much better and good in a straight line but with no judder! A bientotMike From: "'Jean Vignau' jeanvignau@orange.fr [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com Sent: Thursday, 21 September 2017, 7:36 Subject: [mg-tabc] Re: TB supercharger boost gauge   Thanks, Gene   The TB was 5/16 toe-out (1,4 mm) and much better now at 3/16 toe-in (4 mm) (I am sure of the figures in mm!)
