I find the logic in this thread troublesome. Why would one quit the list because of other listers mucking about? I believe that the valuable information, plus the potential for solving difficult problems with our cars far outweigh the chaff of useless information. The point of view appears to be that it is a waste of time to read the unwanted. When I joined various old-car related email lists, I presumed that I could read what interested me, and ignore the rest. An analogy would be going to a restaurant. Would you feel compelled to order everything on the menu? I suppose not. Likewise delete what you are not interested in. Misleading subject lines are an exception, but I have the utmost admiration and confidence in anyone who would bother with such cars as we do to have enough smarts to recognize the unwanted right away and delete it. BTW does anyone know if the server runs slower on non-tabc content?;) Compared to the spam I get regarding mortgage rates, credit cards and adult-related products guaranteed to, well, never mind... The fooling around on this list is really marginal. Let's get out and drive our cars...we'll all feel much better! I do not seek to rile anyone, and if my comments irritate, I sincerely apologize. Please stay on the list to help me when I need it. I promise to help you if I know the answer to your conundrum. Nope. Not me. No sir-ree. I haven't the slightest idea. I'm too scared to even venture a guess. Badger

List Content

Post by i.thomson@talk21.com » Tue May 14, 2002 2:27 am

Hi All, I find this thread interesting because I am ambivalent about the list content. Yes there is a lot of meaningless stuff here but...there is a lot of very useful stuff too. We will all have our own take on this as we all joined for different reasons, but for me for every time I have been exasperated by stuff I am not interested in there is a time which I learn something more - and I have been working on the TC since 1966! Of course I learnt all of the big things the hard way but this list provides me with the small things which I could only learn by direct contact with like minded people. This is its strength but paradoxically the way it comes about is its weakness also. This comes from the nature of the interchange which occurs here, as the trivia which interests me, and annoys others (references to the originality police etc.) is best gleaned in private conversations. And this, to my mind is what we are having: a private conversation, albeit shared by a lot of people. The people who object can walk away from this conversation, go to the bar, and walk back (metaphorically speaking) and hope that the topic has changed to something of more interest to them. Like all conversations there is a degree of rubbish, aside, inuendo, irrelevance, veiled insult and digression along with the pearls of wisdom and offers of help which I believe we all appreciate. Incidentally I do not like the metaphor of the delete key, a metaphor often used with regard to the "rubbish" on television, as we have to see/hear what is being offered before we delete it/switch off. What the objectors want, is for it not to be offered in the first place. Like any conversation I find it fascinating to gain an insight into the people to whom I am talking (and must therefore let them have some insight into myself; as through this piece). In this way we become more like friends than simply people with a common interest - and like all friends there are some we relate to more than others. The nature of the medium, unfortunately, allows us to voice our criticisms more freely than if we were face to face; even to making insults easier. And finally, there are cultural differences. Some cultures (mentioning no names) act in a freer way with their opinions (and perhaps mean them less strongly than those of another culture might interperate them. I feel that we all have to be aware of the sensibilities of those who are less forthcoming (shall we say) with their opinions than others. Here endeth the first lesson - now you can have a go at me!
