In that case, try platinum plugs-wider heat range- 5 or 6 bucks a pop nowadays. Don TC7993

Hey, when are all you guyz gonna quit all this miraculous guesswork, and screw an O2 sensor somewhere in yer exhaust manifolds/pipes & stick a fuel mixture gauge on yer panels (even temporalis fer the authenticity cops)? Then all you gotta worry about is sparks, & spark & valve timing. Don TC7993

If y'all do unvented gas caps a lot, y'all'l soon have nicely flattened T-series slab tanks that'll hold a liter or two of petrol. (How attractive). Don TC7993

Well Gene, I hate these type of faults. The apparently bigger faults, where the **** thing is totally dead are always easier as you know immediately when you have fixed them i.e. it bursts into life! With these sort of faults you cannot rule out anything, no matter how improbable, and often you can't say it's fixed until it's been running OK for some time. Fault finding here is often a process of elimination and it sounds like you have eliminated the fuel pumps. Just to rule out the fuel system completely though wait until it happens and whip the top off the float chambers to check that they are full. Remember that the fuel level will not be that high without the float on though. As to fuel vaporisation IME it only occurs when hot starting after the engiune has been stopped for a short time, and then it clears eventually. Others may chime in with different experiences though. If all is OK I would turn to the electrics; and here I tend to just replace the plugs and points "on spec". I take this line as 1. If they have just been repaced faulty parts may have introduced the fault. 2. if not then they probably needed replacing anyway. 3. If that doesn't fix the fault then keep the removed parts as spares or for next time. That hot/warm coil would have me suspicious, can you borrow another to try it? Although I have never had any confirmed fixes when replacing the condenser/capacitor, It has to be eliminated (after all they do go wrong sometimes). If you still have the fault you will have to look in more obscure areas (earthing, bonding, water leaks (yes i've seen it), blocked exhaust? The latter is extremely unlikely but as Sherlock Holmes nearly said "when you have eliminated the improbable it must be the impossible" - or something like that. Perhaps our more erudite members know the correct quotation? Good hunting Ian Thomson. -------------------

This is for Gene,.. cough sputter etc. I had an early Morris flathead that got real gut-less when hot. The dist. was like the xpag unit. It turned out to be the condensor. I wouldn't rule out the coil. Of course we do have unleaded fuel now, and if your valve seats have regressed, than when your engine heats up, the valve clearance tightens up also. If the engine sounds nice with no clatter, maybe it wouldn't hurt to check the valve lash hot. Chip Hellie --- i.thomson@talk21.com wrote:
