ignition switch

Post by tonygoodall » Fri Apr 27, 2001 12:24 pm

Hi Guys, To all you auto detectives out there, here's an electrical puzzle. I've been doing some simple electrics (flashers) and now, when I turn on the ignition, the sidelights come on. Also, if I just turn the sidelights on (ignition off) the ignition light shines weakly. The flashers were there before, but plumbed into the sidelights, which I'm not too keen on, and things worked OK. I've retraced my steps and even gone back to square one, but to no avail. The ignition switch seems a little "sloppy" but not so bad, I would have thought, but I don't know how to check if that is where the fault lies. If I can't find the problem I will have to travel by night! or put another switch on the sidelights! Any clues? Regards Tony TC9825

Hi Tony, sounds really difficult. To find the error, remove the bulbs from the sidelamps/flashers. Take a multimeter (not only a probe-lamp) and test the voltage at the sockets. You wrote, that the ignitition lamp becomes weak --> what say your ammeter befor and after removing the bulbs? Have you fitted a emergency flashing unit? Maybe your new lamps are bad earthed (but in this case, there wouldn t flow a big current, and the ignitition lamp can t becomes weak)? The best would be to make a scetch of your wiring diagramm and send it to the list?!? Greetings lozi (TC3762) tonygoodall schrieb:

First thing I would look for is a bad or poor earth/ground, this is the area it is most likely. Dean Illinois

I agree on the possibility of a bad ground. Several years ago a fellow club member had a similar problem with the head lights causing the ignition light to come on in his TF. We finally traced it to a bad ground in the head light buckets. I would chase the circuit with the wiring diagram, adding the new circuit to it and look for grounding points. You might even add one to the new circuit. Bad grounds cause all kinds of weird things to occur. Neil Orange Park, Fl TC 0526 PS to Carl and all the rest of the TABC members who attended the GOF South in St. Augustine Florida: It was great seeing you guys and putting faces to names. Thanks for coming. According to Carl we had 3% of the worldwide membership of TABC there. -----Original Message----- From: tonygoodall [mailto:tonygoodall@blueyonder.co.uk] Sent: Friday, April 27, 2001 3:25 PM To: mgtabc Subject: [mg-tabc] ignition switch Hi Guys, To all you auto detectives out there, here's an electrical puzzle. Dear Walter & Group, I have restored thousands of Lucas PLC ignition-headlamp switches over the past 20 years. This service is part of our "dashboard restoration services" that we provide at the Whitworth Shop. Your best bet is to send me the switch & I will restore it, both cosmetically & mechanically. Or send me your postal address & I will send you our Catalog detailing the parts & restoration services that we provide. Craig Seabrook Whitworth Shop Novelty, OH TC/0911

Walter, Now is not a good time to ask this question. My switch checked out fine on the workbench but didn't work correctly when installed. I bit the bullet and purchased a new one from Moss (not exactly as the original but hopefully will work better). So if you now are able to get instructions on rebuilding one, I may have gone down the wrong path with my very expensive purchase. Good luck. I will be interested in any reply you get. Walter I have long ago given up trying to repair those switches and have sent them to Craig Seabrook @ Whithworth Shop in USA. I hate to tell you how many of those have not been reassembled. He does a beautiful job of cosmetically restoring them as well as dash center panels. Joe Curto [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Walter, I repaired one myself years ago, but I wouldn't think of doing it again. Send it to Craig Seabrook. Regards, Charles Hill Walter Prechsl wrote:
