UK schools

Post by Peter Pleitner » Fri Feb 11, 2000 3:11 pm

Hi Whitworth Heads,

This is not precisely on our T-ABC subject, but most of ours have been
subjected to this subject (its fun to play with English words).

Now for my reason and query. I've been contracted to develop an automobile
restoration program at Washtenaw Community College near my home. I'm also
teaching my first class this semester and my students are all adult
professionals or retirees. WCC has an incredible automotive and body repair
facility, a huge welding lab and machine shop, and is surrounded by two
major universities, Eastern Michigan University and the University of
Michigan.

WIC's new president recruited my through a circuitous process (board member)
to provide an adult "enrichment program" and begin to displace some of the
derelicts which usually occupy the service bays and body shop (not
inspirational when high school students are on tour to evaluate career
choices). It seems that there is only one other such program in the US, in
McPherson, Kansas of all places. However, over the years I've come across
an occasional reference to similar programs in the UK but didn't have any
use for the information. Now I do, and can't find any. I've frustrated
search engines without success. Possibly some of our US and especially our
UK members could assist me in compiling a list of such schools, preferably
with web sites, but program administrator and address would be the next
best. I'd like to learn from their experiences.

We just got our web site up. Take a look, it's the beginning, at:
www.wccnet.org/dept/restore.

Cheers, Peter

PS. Naturally I'm not in this for the money, but its not lousy either.
Rather I'm sick of air travel and see this full of potential for success and
fun. The prospect of writing off some of my expenses as business related
and occasional use of their facilities make up for my departure from the
private for profit sector. Its just dealing with a "too comfortable"
bureaucracy with the lights out that is a royal pain.. But soon I won't be
in the dark anymore.
