filter for air cleaner cannister
Hello group-
I have been trying to source a filter for the air cleaner cannister on my '38 TA. Abingdon Spares has a cannister complete with modern filter available but informs me that their supplier will not sell the filter separately. Upon taking my cannister apart I found that some pror ownier had filled the cannister with steel wool. Not a good thing! Is there anyone out there that knows of a source for a proper filter or how to manufacture one?
Thanks,
Craig Siler

Dear Craig:
Suggest you find a KN filter such as I have in my TC. The
info has been posted on our site.
Oiled steel wool was originally used on these filters to
keep out the rocks.

My brother-in-law (an aircraft technician) recommended a material called
filtrete to shroud the outside of the canister with, then removed for shows.
Does anyone have a source for filtrete?

Craig are you sure that it was not the original filter element, Jaguars and
TDs used a curly steel element, as did most other companies. Remember these
were called Silencers not filters back then

Re: filter for air cleaner cannister
I think the new cannister is original from Andy King. I know he makes them
new with a modern filter which you can easily change. I know Barry Walker
also sells them, but he gets them from Andy King. Andy will have the
cheapest price.
Maybe Andy can tell you the which filter it is? He will be the cheapest
source.
I have bought one and it is a quality item. If I have to replace the inner
filter in the future, I just go to an shop and look in a catalog for a new
one. I don't think it is that difficult to find a replacement.

Re: filter for air cleaner cannister
I just got a K&N RC-4340 High Flow air filter and it fits perfectly in the
TC replacement canister. It is available through any car parts store carrying
K&N filters. I'm sure there are other make filters also available that will
fit. Instructions can be found in our archeives, as previuosly stated, under:
_http://www.mg-tabc.org/techn-up/T-airfilter-2-K&N.htm_

Re: filter for air cleaner cannister
Andy King is a well known supplier for spares in the UK. He also has a stand
at Silverstone and Beaulieu. He has a lot of new spares which he makes, and
he has some second hand ones.
Have a look at his website, http://www.mgsparesandrestorations.com

Re: filter for air cleaner cannister
David,
I was a bit puzzled at the K&N Product # you specified and checked with
their website. Please recheck and make sure that you have the correct #.
What I got was a cone shape filter: RC-4340 Product Specifications
Product Style: Round Tapered Universal Air Filter
Base Outside Diameter: 4.5 in (114 mm)
Flange Inside Diameter: 2.688 in (68 mm)
Clearly, this # would never fit a TC cannister filter. The K&N units that I
found fitted my Vokes cannister was product # E-3212 . Since we all rely on
the good stuff here, it would help to get this clarified.
