I have been hearing a clunking noise from the rear right when I ease off the
gas pedal, or accellerate. I have Phil Marino axle shafts. Today I really
tightened the rear knockoffs, with no improvement. With the rear elevated
on jack stands, the right rear wheel can be rotated back and forth with
about an inch of free play at the tread, and the click is obvious. I have a
good standard pumpkin that is set up correctly. It came off my California
car which was replaced with a high speed one for freeway driving. However I
don't have a new differential, gasket. If I make one, does the thickness
matter? I could pull the axles to see if there is any wear at either end,
but I suspect the problem is wear in the ring and pinion.
Suggestions? I would like to run it around this holiday weekend. There is a
parade in North Pole on July 4th and other festivities. It might go for many
miles, or it could go with disastrous conquences for the pumkin. Your
experience and suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Re: TC differential replacement questions
Gene:
If you set the hand brake full on when the rear wheels are elevated, and you
try rotating the wheel, can you detect relative motion between the wheel and
the brake drum? If so, you have worn splines on the hub or wheel or both.
Then again the usual sound for that condition is a clonk rather than a
clunk.
