Title number: engine or car number?

Post by davjak@aol.com » Sat Jun 25, 2005 9:26 am

I have noticed that on my three TC's that the vin for the title/registration(s) is the engine number instead of the TCxxxx car number. I am sure this is correct since on two of my cars I have copies of the original CA Title/registration. What have others found? I would think the car number would be correct.. engines are replaced on occasions. Dave TCx3 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

For years here in CA, the DMV would use the engine number when registering MG's. I don't know about other marques. My TA came from Louisiana with the original engine number on the title. I had a cop come to myhouse to view the poor thing and to do the VIN verification. I explained to him that this was not correct, the original engine was scrapped years before and he duly wrote it all up and verified the chassis number...........and when the new title came back, the DMV had again used the original engine number......I gave up! Terry: Prior to 1956, all vehicles were registered by Engine no. This was changed after 1956, and they were ALL done by VIN. I had my car switched back to VIN later. Skip Kelsey.................................................................... At 10:12 AM 6/25/2005 -0700, Terry Sanders wrote:

California used the engine number for registration. When I bought my TC (71??) in 1956 it was made of the front fenders from one car, engine from another & the balance from a third. The seller looked around until he found the "pink slip" that matched the engine, and that's the way it's been registered ever since. Nobody worried about numbers matching or anything like that. Just get the car registered & drive it. Dan Harmer San Diego '48 TC 71?? (XPAG6043)

Dave; TC 8192 had the same problem. When I bought it the title had the engine number as the car number. Since I got a title through a "Title Service" and not through the normal route I simply had it changed. I believe as you do that it should be the car number not the engine number and agree with you that sometimes engines are changed. My TC was brought in from out of state and I registered it in California as VIN: TC1353.
