Hey Doug:
Prudence dictates that one should mount a good pump (digitaldon favors the
holley red pump), mounted at the rear, ala TF, and pumping thru the SU on
the scuttle. That way, one is assured of always having an adequate fuel
supply.

You know, I get tired of hearing about things like SU pumps failing so often that you need a second pump hidden away somewhere.
My SU has never failed in the 18 years I've driven the car. In addition, the Regulator/cut out has not malfunctioned, and neither has the ignition system. I've not had a generator failure, but I will admit that after rebuilding the XPAG, the old starter gave up the ghost.
Are the circa 1940s English auto electrics so bad? My experience has been quite positive.

Rick,
So long as your Lucas unit is in good shape you've no need to bother
with those rat-a-tat-tat units. My TC runs a Lucas and I have never had
an ounce of trouble with it. Its like everything else, keep it well
maintained and it will go the distance.

Hi Rick,
I'm 60+ and never went to dentist for last 40 years except few
times for cleaning and polishing. Got still all my original second set
of teeth what God gave me. It is still in good shape with out any
damage. May be because I am from the healthy but poor third world.
With the Lucas electric is very similar. First of all you had to
have luck, then you had to do some maintenance and service to keep them
healthy. But certain things like aging/wear you are helpless. But
regular maintenance can save a lot of headache and prolong the life.
By the way I was not able to overhaul the TC 0448 SU pump yet. Borrowed
one from David Tasa for trial start of engine.
Have a nice day.

Murray,
Just for the record the T Series fuel pumps were made by SU, not Lucas.
Like just about everything else on our cars if it's set up properly it
will operate faultlessly for many years.
Incidentally why do our American cousins love to snipe about Lucas? I
was in Atlanta once and one of the guys I was with told a joke that had
everyone falling about laughing. It went something like: Q. Why do
Brits like warm beer? A. Because Lucas make their refrigerators!
Very amusing, but wrong on both counts.

Re: electric fuel pumps (on TC's)
Peter,
You're of course quite correct. They are SU units which I'd not
fogotten, simply confused with Lucas.
We've got the same jokes here, indeed I've been guilty of telling more
than one of them. Even MGs themselves have a bad rep in some circles
for reliability. But if you go out and by an old MGB or such like and
expect the 30 year old thing to be trouble free you'll be disappointed.
But you've heard I suspect that Count Magenti Mirelli is the
illigitimate son of Joseph Lucas?
Cheers - Murray

Re: electric fuel pumps (on TC's)
G'day Rick..
I couldn't agree more!
Resorting to second fuel pump is a cop out.
Fix the SU properly in the first instance... and it will give years of
faithful service.
Lucas, and to a lesser extent SU, have been the target for too many
cheap shots.
For over 40 years mucking about with old MG's, Lucas and S, have proved
almost foolproof... and on that score I rate highly... resistant to
many of my
'now-let's-see'just-what-happens-if-I-just-bridge-across-this-little-thi
ngo' type of curious pokes with the screwdriver.
However...
The 1970's is a different matter. I've given examples here before of
the junky switchgear and the likes experienced on my little lady's
MGBGTV8.
Past ownership of FIATS and Lancias also exposed me to the dreaded
Magneti Morelli.
Now there's another story... a manufacturer that makes Joe Lucas
positively shine!

Re: electric fuel pumps (on TC's)
Not all of us do.
I have found Lucas equipment to be VERY dependable if only the required
maintenance is done.
Best,

Re: electric fuel pumps (on TC's)
Is there anything that will cut of the pumps off if you get in an accident?
The later cars have an inertia switch that stops the fuel pump. Do think that
we should add these to our cars?

Rolland,
Yeah, it's the ignition switch. After an accident and just before your heart
stops beating, reach up with your left hand and turn the key.
Happy accident free motoring! Ben TC 4260
