Rear (LH) drum (therfore wheel) WOBBLE returns from N.C.

Post by rmalsed2@juno.com » Mon May 23, 2005 9:23 pm

Just about to head for SCL,UT and found that The 10,000 MILE TD's rear LH drum has a wobble to it when tire is off the ground and is hand wiggled. The TD has (60) spoke wheel conversion as I bought it, the same trouble was found about 3-4,000 miles ago in North Carolina last Sept.-Oct and fixed by a slight shimming the axel shaft nut so when it was snug/tight the cotter pin holes (nut/axel)aligned (whitout the shim the nut was either too loose or too tight when holes aligned -- or couldn't be tightened enough to align, I can't remember). The axel(s) is a new 'improved' part installation by M. Goodman before the 10K drive of '04. The RH same is just fine, although that nut/pin has NOT been inspected, ther is NO wobble to the wheel/drum. I have not removed the drum yet, but when I do, my guess is that my mechanically blind eyes will not see much (of meaning to me)! So I'm open for some help with what might be at my buggy. OR what I might ought to do for test/inspect (last time in NC bearing seemed in fine shape). Thanks, Rick ___________________________________________________________________ Get Juno Platinum for as low as $4.97/month! Unlimited Internet Access with 250MB of Email Storage. Rick, I'm sure you are under tightening the axle nut. Get a socket, breaker bar and a four foot length of pipe and use the pipe as a lever to tighten the nut to next split pin hole. The torque required is huge, I don't have a number, but several hundred foot-pounds. If you shimmed the nut and lightly tightened it, the splines on the axle shaft and hub will wear.
