OIL SUMP - What happens to the extra pint that I put in ?

According to the Brown Book (pgs 14-15) "When the sump has been completely drained it requires approximately 1 1/8 gallons (5.1 litres) of oil to bring the level to the "FULL" mark." I presume that the Brown Book takes into consideration the oil required to fill the filter, so why does it take 5 quarts (1 1/4 gallons) and a bit more to bring the oil level in my car up to "FULL" Could it be that my dipstick is off ? I doubt that extra pint makes any difference insofar as proper lubrication is concerned, I just thought I'd ask if others have the same anomaly. The Brown Book was written when all of the world that was coloured in red used imperial measurements. So the 1.125 gallons is imperial which is 20% larger than the US gallon, which is a 17 century wine gallon presumably designed so that you got less than what you thought you paid for. Of course, we're too smart to ever fall for something like that in Canada. First we got the metric system, and the bastards sold us 4 litres for the price of an Imperial gallon (plus a markup for the cost of the changeover). Then we got free trade with the U.S., THEN the b's switched to the U.S. gallons and quarts, which are smaller yet! It's almost enough to make you join up with the NRA, and lobby parliament for an armed citizenry!! David Cameron
