More Camshaft Info

Post by Rick Waters » Thu Mar 31, 2005 8:23 pm

My Crane xpag cam (standard grind) arrived, and I got a chance to compare it to the old cam (OEM reground). The Crane has a lot more "meat" in the lobes, with the lobes being both slightly wider, and with a bigger base circle, although it's not fair to compare a new cam to one that's been reground. Incidentally, the old cam had virtually no "lobe" left for the number one exhaust. It was simply worn down to almost nothing. Neither the mechanic nor I can figure out just why it went, although I note that when it was put in the engine, it had had one lobe welded, but I don't know if that was the lobe. The lifter was in sad shape, and my guess is that the lifter wore through the surface hardness, then destroyed to lobe. A good look at all the lifters showed that not all were revolving as they were supposed to. The lifters rotated nicely in their bores, were not too loose, and had, with the exception mentioned above, no surface defects. Anyway, it's back together now, and I expect that with all four cylinders firing properly, something else will break soon! -Rick (and TC 7881) -Rick Waters --------------------------------- Post your free ad now!
