Vapour Lock....again
Listers,
I was out for a run to the shops today in the TC and was bitten by vapour lock again on the return trip. This is an ongoing issue for me when ever I get stuck in traffic or do a nice run (20 minutes or more) and then a brief stop. I'm used to this but it seems to be happening more often lately, I THINK the timing and mixture are correct, but that being said it does seem a bit down on power.
I digress. Has anyone fitted heat shields or MGB style spacers between the carb body and the intake manifold? With what results? I have a good rad, water wetter, four blade fan. Runs great as long as I keep moving. Seems the issue is when the heat from the manifold(s) sinks into the carb bodies while stopped. I await the wisdom of the list
Cheers,
Ross

Re: Vapour Lock....again
I've always been curious why some people have serious problems with vapor lock and others don't. The only time I've had an issue is re-starting on a very hot day (triple digit temps). But some others can't navigate traffic without pulling the choke to keep it running. I typically run my cars a tad rich so I'm sure that helps but it doesn't seem like enough on its own to overcome fuel boiling in the pump and/or bowls. I'll be watching this thread with interest.

If choking does not help start, try tickling the carbs. Your fuel height at bridge may be set low.Duncan-

Re: Vapour Lock....again
I had the same trouble with my '48 TC and the only sure way I found to prevent vapor lock was to install a 12v solid state electric fuel pump in an inconspicuous place close to the gas tank outlet. I also installed a switch under the dash so that I could shut off the auxiliary pump, as needed. Cost was nominal - less than $25.

Got to be honest and say that you guys with fuel vaporisation should be looking a little harder at the state of your tune, and the state of you fuel system. If all is well, and in as new condition. Lets not forget these cars were once used as daily drivers from new. Now surely if this problem was endemic, there would be volumes and volumes written up on the topic and how to fix it. Some of the so called remedies being postulated such as the fitting of extra fuel pumps and the like are only masking a bigger issue.

Re: Vapour Lock....again
Ross,
I fitted MGB plastic heat blocks (needs longer carb studs) and have never had a vapour lock. The car was in France for its first year
after rebuild and was running in 30+c temps.
I actually fitted them to stop the flanges distorting, which is due to heat not overtightening.

Re: Vapour Lock....again
Ross,
I agree with Norman, I fitted plastic spacers when I rebuild my car and have never suffered from vapour lock. From memory they are around 9 - 10mm (3/8 ins) thick. They are available from Burlen Fuel systems and eBay.

Peter Cole.

Try another tank of fuel before you start fiddling with everything. Test the easy stuff before getting a not the complex.

Re: Vapour Lock....again
TC 2911 is set up with spacers under the carbs and a home made heat shield above a ceramic coated exhaust manifold. While this is helpful, on a good hot day, heat soak starting may require a bit of choke for smooth running for a short while. The car is also black and that warm bonnet doesn't help things either.
