Original paint specs

Maybe a question for Tom Wilson:   Were our cars originally painted in Lacquer or Enamel?   This should be interesting!   ~Mark TC8126  Sunny Ohio

hi Mark - whatever you call it on your side of the pond, we originally used Cellulose...there must be a paint technologist among us for a deeper explanation! RogerTC0978

#ygrps-yiv-913503133 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;} Roger, I believe we called it Nitrocellulose lacquer or more commonly just plain lacquer over here. Results from 'Type of Original Paint on a TC" test:
TC5147, was disassembled about 1953 after being rolled in a hill climb in Ohio.  Body parts all stored indoors, original color (green) still there with a thin layer of gray primer underneath. Enamel:  Front and rear wings, front splash apron, spare tire carrier.
Nitrocellulose:  Doors (there is no tub to test, only the doors remain) The battery box lid (the MG press shop green) is nitrocellulose.
Also tested a late TC footramp Doug Pelton recently sent me.  It was originally body color green, with a later coating of black on some of it.  This paint was nitrocellulose.  Remember the late TCs all had body color bulkheads. Tom Wilson
