No hot restart problem? I am envious! I get it often on hot days in the UK but not in France. I think it is something to do with the fuel composition winter/summer and UK/Europe. I paid attention to the presentation at the MG Car Club Rebuild last year and read the write-up carefully in Totally T Types 2, but I still haven t cracked it. I have an MGB fan, new high capacity water pump, overhauled engine, electronic ignition, decent radiator, correct mixture and timing, and a state of flummoxedness. I now leave the bonnet open when I park, carb side, to help the heat dissipate. From what I have read, it is heat from the cylinders travelling back and heating up the carbs causing vaporisation, rather than underbonnet ambient temps generally. Anyone got any ideas to overcome? Clive can only respond if he has got over the excitement of his birthday! Roger Bateman

Hi Roger, Have you tried BP Ultimate? Seems to work for me generally.  Regards  Jeff Townsend  N Cambs TA1957. Roger, I did the work with Paul Ireland at Manchester University that he wrote about in TTT2 and spoke about at Rebuild. The hot start problem is the most visible of the problems running old cars on modern fuel. It's a complex issue and our cars behave in different ways, so there's no silver bullet. My advice is to set the distributor to give you as much advance as possible but leaving a safe margin before the onset of pinking. The other advice, and I believe the key, is to fit insulating spacers between the carbs and the inlet manifold. Mine are about 6-7mm thick acetile. Whilst you're there it also worth drilling a hole down the centres of the carb/manifold fixing bolts, not to lighten them like the racers do, but to reduce the heat flow from the manifold to the carbs. Interestingly one of my sons has a 2 litre Triumph Vitesse and that suffers badly. It has a mechanical fuel pump bolted to the block with a glass domed filter. You can see the fuel boiling after a run and the car won't start again until the boiling stops. It runs fine though because fresh fuel never gets a chance to boil. If your car definitely has a problem and your carbs are bolted directly to the manifold with only a thin gasket between them it would be interesting to hear if spacer help. They are readily available from Burlen and Ebay. The thicker the better of course but check you still have clearance between the air cleaner and the bonnet. Regards Peter

Put fuel pump close to tank, so only cooler fuel gets to carbs. Modern cars have transitioned to putting fuel pump in  tank to cureVapor lock. -Bill HyattSent from my iPhone

My TC has also had this hot restart problem for years, and routine failure in slow-moving or stationary traffic.  There s no sign of engine overheating, which rules out the cooling system.  Ceramic coating the exhaust manifold might help, but this is expensive.  Here s my list of possible options (UK related URLs)

Hi Roger, You know, after the XPAG -EG cars were over MG always used a metal shield between the intake manifold and carburetors.  They did this obviously for a reason. Don t recall those cars having vapor lock issues. My last TC had one fitted by the new owner and he said he thought the problem was cured. Of course they don't always act up. You can try the clothes pins on the fuel line. Make sure they're wood.  Somethings getting too warm like carburetors or fuel lines.  Never cared for the intake manifold or porting of the XPAG head. Vacuous oversized hole.  To me it seems like at cranking speeds not a lot of fuel flow gets into the cylinder at any great speed. Plus this cavern is full of very hot air.  Probably just like my theory but that's what theories are.  Chip Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

I have fitted spacers between the carbs and manifold as well as a heat shield that has exhaust wrap attached to it, and I have ceramic coated the exhaust manifold and still have a hot soak issue. Perhaps not as bad as it was. I have found that pulling the choke a touch will at least keep it running albeit a bit rough, till cooler fuel is flowing. My car is black which doesn't help on a warm sunny day. I suspect an electric fan blowing cooler air through the engine compartment would help dramatically. There s no sign of engine overheating, which rules out the cooling system. Ceramic coating the exhaust manifold might help, but this is expensive. With many thanks to all who  responded so quickly and internationally!
I haven't got carb spacers, so I shall fit some ASAP.  I'm fascinated by the idea of drilling down my carb mounting bolts, and guess a lathe is necessary to achieve this properly. Nevertheless, although I don't have a lathe (this could be the excuse I have been waiting for), I will give this serious consideration and probably give one of my lathe-owning friends some practice with theirs.
Ditto heatshield, which should not be so difficult to make and fit.
Thanks everyone,
Roger
