Re molasses, it is marginally acidic, generally 5-7 on PH scale. White vinegar is a more aggressive acid with a PH of 2-4. (A PH of 7 is neutral, a la water). #'s > than 7, are on Base side of ledger.

 

BTW, "Whink" (brown bottle) in cleanser section of many grocery stores is a very dilute Hydrofluoric acid, (you can have skin contact w/o burn) and it is a very effective rust stain remover for fabric & small parts. Also many rust removing products at hardware stores have HF as active the ingredient.
