TABC headlight Bracket / Wing stays

I've just discovered that I have two Passenger side headlight Brackets. Yes, they are different!
Does anyone have a spare Driver side TABC headlight Bracket they could part with ?
This is the one that when viewed fitted and looking at it from the front of the car, has the LARGER hole where the bracket fits to the Radiator bracket facing you (to take the stepped bit of the chromed fixing bolt.)
It goes without saying, that I therefore have a spare drivers side one if anyone is in need !
As well as the bolt hole, the slight angle of the flat that goes against the wing is reversed too on either side

A follow up on this topic

A number of people have said they have broken headlight brackets. THEY BREAK

USUALLY BECAUSE MOST OF THE REPLACEMENT BOLTS AVAILABLE CURRENTLY

ARE WRONGLY MADE and then end up WRONGLY FITTED and bolted up so snapping

one of the lugs!

It is NOT intended that the 2 lugs on the headlight bracket that fix to the radiator bracket eye

are pinched together when the nut is tightened, the bolt should lock up only on the rear lug.

The Chrome bolt head at the front should NOT be tight against the front lug of the headlight

bracket when fitted, there should be a very slight clearance. It is the REAR lug that takes

the fixing when the nut is tightened like so : -

A number, if not all the replacement bolts I ve seen will not tighten properly like this. The

5/8 diameter section is too short and so it will overtighten, pinching the two lugs together

and so breaking one of the lugs off.

The Bolt should be made so as to allow the nut to only tighten against the rear lug of the

headlight bracket. There should remain a very small gap between the big bolt head at the

front, and the face of the forward lug. The radiator bracket is a close but not a tight fit on the

5/8 inch section of the bolt.

If a shim is required it wouldn't have to be very thick.  I could see using a star washer that fits the threaded shank of the bolt as a shim.  One could then easily trim down the tips of the stars so that the outside dimension of the shim does not exceed the dimension of the thicker shoulder of the bolt. - Mike Hughes  - -  '37 TA 0512

Guys,These bracket bolts are basically shoulder bolts aka stripper bolts. Normally widely available with socket head, but also with hex head. See:http://www.metricmcc.com/catalog/Ch1/1-30.pdf

Easy to make on a lathe from a  5/8 hex bolt or hex stock

Yes Bill, That's right. But if you look to the ones you have referenced, these are even worse, indeed they have the same problem that a couple of ex Moss bolts I have here have, and that's that the shoulder between the 5/8 inch section and the 1/2 inch thread section is not square but is tapered, so would be a disaster ! So Guys, DON'T RUSH OFF AND BUY THESE or you will be in even worse trouble ! Also the correct boltheads and nut are cut from BSF / Whitworth stock and I doubt anyone these days sells a stepped ( or aka "stripper" ) bolt in this size. Maybe these modern ones should be known as "Snapper " bolts when used for the MG application :-}! USUALLY BECAUSE MOST OF THE REPLACEMENT BOLTS AVAILABLE CURRENTLY [u][/u][u][/u]

ARE WRONGLY MADE and then end up WRONGLY FITTED and bolted up so snapping [u][/u][u][/u]

one of the lugs! [u][/u][u][/u]

It is NOT intended that the 2 lugs on the headlight bracket that fix to the radiator bracket eye [u][/u][u][/u]

are pinched together when the nut is tightened, the bolt should lock up only on the rear lug.[u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

The Chrome bolt head at the front should NOT be tight against the front lug of the headlight [u][/u][u][/u]

bracket when fitted, there should be a very slight clearance. It is the REAR lug that takes [u][/u][u][/u]

the fixing when the nut is tightened like so : -[u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

A number, if not all the replacement bolts I ve seen will not tighten properly like this. The [u][/u][u][/u]

5/8 diameter section is too short and so it will overtighten, pinching the two lugs together [u][/u][u][/u]

and so breaking one of the lugs off.[u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

The Bolt should be made so as to allow the nut to only tighten against the rear lug of the [u][/u][u][/u]

headlight bracket. There should remain a very small gap between the big bolt head at the [u][/u][u][/u]

front, and the face of the forward lug. The radiator bracket is a close but not a tight fit on the [u][/u][u][/u]

Re the 45 degree "shoulder on the bolts Bill pointed to, my point was that Moss were (are still ?) using this type of bolt with the 45 degree shoulder, which will not work at all well and are still likely to crack the bracket. Doubtless there are ones with square shoulders, but I doubt in Whitworth / BSF sizes. I make up my own bolts and the half nut using regular 0.820 inch AF Whitworth / BSF Stainless Steel stock Hex bar and cutting down regular 1/2 inch BSF stainless bolts to half full nut thickness. They polish up beautifully ! A number of people have said they have broken headlight brackets. THEY BREAK [u][/u][u][/u]

USUALLY BECAUSE MOST OF THE REPLACEMENT BOLTS AVAILABLE CURRENTLY [u][/u][u][/u]

ARE WRONGLY MADE and then end up WRONGLY FITTED and bolted up so snapping [u][/u][u][/u]

one of the lugs! [u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

It is NOT intended that the 2 lugs on the headlight bracket that fix to the radiator bracket eye [u][/u][u][/u]

are pinched together when the nut is tightened, the bolt should lock up only on the rear lug.[u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

The Chrome bolt head at the front should NOT be tight against the front lug of the headlight [u][/u][u][/u]

bracket when fitted, there should be a very slight clearance. It is the REAR lug that takes [u][/u][u][/u]

the fixing when the nut is tightened like so : -[u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

A number, if not all the replacement bolts I ve seen will not tighten properly like this. The [u][/u][u][/u]

5/8 diameter section is too short and so it will overtighten, pinching the two lugs together [u][/u][u][/u]

and so breaking one of the lugs off.[u][/u][u][/u]

[u][/u][u][/u]

The Bolt should be made so as to allow the nut to only tighten against the rear lug of the [u][/u][u][/u]

headlight bracket. There should remain a very small gap between the big bolt head at the [u][/u][u][/u]

front, and the face of the forward lug. The radiator bracket is a close but not a tight fit on the [u][/u][u][/u]

5/8 inch section of the bolt.[u][/u][u][/u]
