Unseizing rusty parts

Post by rogerbateman@rocketmail.com » Sat Apr 20, 2019 10:58 am

I am the owner of TC2456 and I am restoring a non-T-Type vehicle, but please don't stop reading because I need the advice of your collective wisdom. There are a number of rusty steel parts that need serious de-rusting, and some of them have seized joints- for instance, a hood frame and brake linkages. What methods are recommended to do this? In the case of seized parts I have heard of soaking in diesel fuel or Plus Gas or WD40.   What else can you suggest? to remove general heavy corrosion from rusty steel items, such as steering and suspension parts, what is best?  Dipping in something (what??), or grit blasting? This vehicle also has an aluminium monocoque body from which I would like the paint removed to save me days with the Nitromors.  I have heard that soda blasting or crushed glass blasting is good for this, whereas grit blasting will damage and stress the thin aluminium structure. Any recommendations? If anyone is interested in knowing what the car is, I will set a little quiz for the answer. But first, let's deal with the issue of rust first. Thanks everyone! Regarding the paint removal on aluminum parts caution the fellows at the blast shop to pay attention to air pressure, I had a shop who should have known better  turn some aluminum panels on my Morris Minor Woody inside out  doing a plastic media blast. The fellows who did the right job on my Morris  explained that on a steel top the pressure used on the inside should be less than on the outside as the strength of the steel is on the outside in  as opposed to inside out , this may also apply to a aluminum body There is a Electrical  induction heating system  for heating up frozen hardware  with out flames , as for using liquids WD 40 has a new product  # 30025  rust penetrant   which works pretty good given enough time.  I am also sure there are a million home brews such as coke Cola , brake fluid Kerosene etc . I am sure you can google up many home brews -----Original Message----- From: rogerbateman@rocketmail.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: mg-tabc mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sat, Apr 20, 2019 2:07 pm Subject: [mg-tabc] Unseizing rusty parts   I am the owner of TC2456 and I am restoring a non-T-Type vehicle, but please don't stop reading because I need the advice of your collective wisdom. Another caution is if using Soda Blasting ask about if it is  corrosive to aluminum, I have seen some nasty carburettors which have come in which have been blasted with sodium bi carb fire extinguishers. The Aluminum used on car bodies is soft as butter so even plastic media roughens up the metal -----Original Message----- From: rogerbateman@rocketmail.com [mg-tabc] mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: mg-tabc mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Sat, Apr 20, 2019 2:07 pm Subject: [mg-tabc] Unseizing rusty parts   I am the owner of TC2456 and I am restoring a non-T-Type vehicle, but please don't stop reading because I need the advice of your collective wisdom. Re: Unseizing rusty parts

Some time ago there was a trial mentioned on this site which said that comparison testing against WD40 (which is mostly kerosene) and other similar commercial standbys showed that by far the best was a home brew of equal parts transmission fluid and acetone. For encrusted rust there is a product called Evaporust which comes in gallons & claims to be benign and reusable (up to a point) and has worked for me on heavily encrusted tools. If the metal is too big for emersion, maybe generously brushing it on would work. Dick Warren in Vt

If anyone is interested in knowing what the car is, I will set a little quiz for the answer. But first, let's deal with the issue of rust first.

Thanks everyone!

Hi RogerI ve restored several TCs,1955 bug and an Austin Healey. I m currently working on a very rusty TC. For nuts and bolts I use an oxy to heat the nuts red hot. They come off with very little effort. I ve had good luck with molasses (1 part molasses 8 parts water) with freeing up parts and it doesn t hurt the metal. Takes about 2 weeks. Buy it from a farm supply place. Lots of videos on the net. I ve had bad luck with soda blasting steel. The guy who blasted some rims admitted (after the rust came back ) that soda is good for removing paint but not rust.Cheers Bob Sent from my iPad

Hi Roger,I understand that for individual heavily rusted parts soaking in a diluted solution of molasses for a period has a proven record of success. Although I have not tried it myself I have seen excellent results. Try Google.George

Funny, last night while sucked into the Youtube Vortex, I came across a fellow doing a product evaluation on rust removal. He had several commercial products, as well as home brews: coca-cola, vinegar etc. He used ancient, heavily rusted rail road spikes as his test material. Long story short, he eliminated a bunch (coke, etc) then declared a tentative winner. He then put all the other spikes into the winning product to see if their condition improved, eliminating variations in spike material and condition as a variable. Every one improved when soaked for a few hours in the winning product. This test was for removing heavy, pitted rust. Obviously not a lot of moving parts on a railway spike so penetrating rusty joints was not part of the test The winner was an in house Eastwood Rust remover. I was surprised because I've always sworn by Naval Jelly and he declared it in an 'also ran'. I can probably find a link to the video if anyone's interested. He claimed to be an unsponsored independant. Thanks to everyone for such helpful replies.  I now have lots of ideas of how to proceed, as well as lots of new methods to try.  Truthfully I had never heard of using molasses for this job!
