I took an MGTC seat apart to replace a few broken springs and found the
only attachment to the
wooden back was a couple of leather strips attaching to the bottom wire
to the wooden back. Why is that,
looks like it would be more stable to have the spring stapled to the
wooden back.

That s how springcases were attached to backing boards from the J Midget through the TD. - for all MGs, even the back seats of the large WA saloon. These were made for almost all cars st Morris Bodies Branch.
Pressure of the seat cover kept everything in place.
Those little leather strips are a good source for original colors.
