Lawrie's advice is extremely valuable to MG enthusiasts, especially those of us who like to do their own repairs, as I did for many years. As a member of the Sacramento Valley MG Car club, I have known Lawrie for many years and I, as well as other members, have benefited from his knowledge. A few years ago I was restoring a TC and was having a major problem with starting the rebuilt engine, and even when it did start it wouldn't get up to speed, and it would overheat. Trailered the TC to Lawrie's shop and he quickly figured that the fault could be that the timing chain was not installed properly. That is, it was off by one or two teeth, which turned out to be correct. As I'm sure many of you know this is easily done, especially if you don't realize that the picture in shop manuals shows the engine upside down. That mistake puts the smaller vs larger number of links in the incorrect opposite direction. Once that was corrected the engine ran perfectly. Fellow TABC ers, Over the last several days I was struggling with a TC that just wouldn t start. After checking and re-checking I decided to ask for advice from an old friend, Lawrie Alexander. He took the time to write up a great check list for me to follow. I thought I would pass this along to everyone. Oh, and the problem. I forgot that the distributor turns counter clockwise.
