Good afternoon MGers

In refitting my hand brake cross shaft I have a clamp around it that has a spring attached. I cannot see for the life of me were the other end of the spring attaches to. Can someone let me know.

Geoff,

The spring provides the force that makes the handbrake 'fly off' when you give a light pull on the handle then let go. As you can see in Doug's photos the bracket is fitted in line with the bracket that supports the tunnel on the left side. If my memory is correct there is a small hole on the underside of the bracket for attaching the forward end of the spring. The bracket on the hand brake cross shaft should be positioned so that the arm that the spring is attached to is in the full upright (vertical) position when the hand brake lever is fully pulled back, the spring is then stretched out. When you give a light pull on the handle it releases the pawl from the ratchet then you let go and the spring pulls on the shaft which rotates forward pulling the handbrake adjustment rod down which in turn moves the handbrake forward to the full off position.

The same sheet metal clamp is also used on MMM cars but located on the extreme left side of the brake cross shaft and the spring attaches to a very small L shaped bracket attached to the inside of the chassis rail (MMM chassis are not box sectioned in this area). On the right hand side the brake light switch is mounted down on the undertray about half way between the brake pedal and cross shaft and below the rod that connects the brake pedal to the brake cross shaft. A spring connects the side lever arm on the switch up and back to a small clamp on the brake rod.

T types of course don't have undertrays so the TC brake switch (very similar to MMM type but with a center pull) is on a small bracket attached to the bottom of the chassis rail forward of the brake pedal. The spring goes from the switch back to a small eyelet on the underside of the brake pedal. The heavier pedal return spring also attaches to the same eyelet.
