Bishops Cam adjustment

Post by Graham Knight » Mon Oct 16, 2017 1:00 pm

Hi, Jim Buell's document "The MGTC Front End" covers adjustment of the peg to cam clearance. It says "Set it up so that you have a definite drag on the shaft in the very center position". Should this be assessed by twiddling the shaft with my fingers or with the steering wheel mounted? Many thanks. Graham

Graham, put the steering wheel on the car and raise the front end off the ground you should feel it easily.  Remember that high point is supposed to be set up with the wheels in the straight ahead position.Steve TC2911 From: "Graham Knight graham.knight5@gmail.com [mg-tabc]" mg-tabc-noreply@yahoogroups.com> To: 'TABC-Group' mg-tabc@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Monday, October 16, 2017 4:01 PM Subject: [mg-tabc] Bishops Cam adjustment   Hi, Jim Buell's document "The MGTC Front End" covers adjustment of the peg to cam clearance. hi Graham - presumably you have set up the end shims so that there is a very slight drag on the worm bearings, so with the sector shaft in, you probably won't be able to turn the shaft with fingers: in any case you will get a better "feel" from the rim of the steering wheel. In the centre position you will get a slight stiffening, getting looser either side. When centred, adjust the drag link so that the wheels are in the straight-ahead position (drop arm should also be marked and coincide with the mark on the end of the sector shaft). I have not read "The TC Front End" for several years, but I'm sure Jim would have mentioned the importance of having the top plate absolutely flat, which is best done on a surface-grinder. It is usually bowed up from the pressure of the sector shaft being forced out of the worm. Properly set up, the venerable Bishops Cam works well, and I see no need for Tomkins kits (who was he, BTW?) with their attendant problems, yet alone alien boxes... ocTagonally Roger

Hi Roger,

Properly set up, the venerable Bishops Cam works well, and I see no need for Tomkins kits (who was he, BTW?) with their attendant problems, yet alone alien boxes... I have flattened the top plate as best I can with the aid of abrasive paper and a surface plate. It's pretty thin so I'm not surprised it becomes bowed. Would there be any gain from making a new one from thicker material? I have some 1/4" steel which would do the job with a bit of elbow grease. Graham

Original BC plate is 4.5mm. Moss sells a replacement plate for $11, and it appears to have the correct sort of hard chrome treatment as the original, and is the correct thickness. I got one a few years back to replace the original, which had developed surface scratches from the top surface of the sector shaft. Grinding the plate surface flat will eliminate the hard chrome, which is a sort of surface hardening process. Duncan- TC9866 --------------------------------------------

Thanks Duncan. Mine seems to be about 3mm thick. The Moss one sounds like a bargain. Moss Europe does not have one in stock and, as far as I can see, Moss US does not ship to the UK, so I will have to wait. Graham
