Crankshaft ID

Post by Jennifer and Hugh Pite » Mon Jun 17, 2002 9:06 am

I recently removed a crankshaft from an XPAG engine and could find no casting numbers or marks of any sort on it. Does anyone know if XPAG crankshafts were made "aftermarket" and, if so, how does one identify them as to the maker? Hugh Pite '48 TC '33 J-2 [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Hi Hugh: I've only seen MG made cranks, forged from different grades of Brit steel, depending on early or late, but am curious about the $1800 ones sold by Moss, supposedly forged from 4340 steel, a US spec. One certainly wonders who did the tooling to produce these, and questions directed to Moss might prove informative, such as are they tufftrided, etc.etc. Don TC 7993

Don: The Moss cranks are made in 4340 chromolley steel. They are nitrided also. The forgings are made in England and shipped here for grinding. This is done here in L.A. at Scat engineering. To my knowledge, no one has ever broken one of these cranks. Skip Kelsey.................................................. At 05:09 PM 6/17/02 +0000, Donald Wilkinson wrote:
