As far as I know the factory never fitted a gasket at this interface, despite it being wetted by the gearbox oil. (Half the complaints about rear engine oil leaks seem to be due to Gearbox leakage from this join ot the Mainshaft oil seal on investigation) I always thought there should be a thin gasket here - Can anyone see a reason for not fitting a thin gasket? Regards Clive

I agree, the factory never fitted a gasket between the bellhousing and gearbox. The bearing extension spigot on the bell housing should contact the outer race of the front ball bearing to locate it. If you install a gasket on the main joint, no matter how "thin", the spigot will be pulled away from the outer race. Hence the bearing and input shaft can move back and forth in the gearbox casing. No good. The TC gearbox uses a flat and bellville washer behind the spigot to ensure some pressure on the outer bearing race. For unknown reasons, the TD/TF gearbox has none of these washers and so the bearing location depends entirely on the accuracy of the spigot extension. It may be a good idea on these gearboxes to install some belleville washers to ensure the spigot bears against the outer race. I use a smear of good non-hardening gasket goo ( Permatex 2 ) over the entire face of the bell housing and torque the eight bolts holding the bell housing to the casing. I use 25 ft-lbs torque. I don't think I have had any leaks from this joint. Regards, Bob Grunau As far as I know the factory never fitted a gasket at this interface, despite it being wetted by the gearbox oil.
