While we're on red stuff, anybody know what happened to "Redex" which was used as an upper cylinder lube when TC's were contemporary ?

Austin Redex is still available from most GOOD! car accessory shops. I have seen it in half pint plastic containers and use it in my lawnmower inserted in the spark plug as a winter clean out for the upper cylinder!! Paul TC 3348 MGB

Austin, Can't really vouch for Redex, other than an embarrassing event some years ago, miles from home in the Lake District visiting friends, when I gave my modern car a good dose of Redex into each cylinder. Left it over night. Came back after breakfast to find that the engine would not turn over. Locked solid. Oh god, maybe the redex melted any carbon, then it reset gluing the pistons into the bores! After some time, the engine turned over and started, producing a totally dense pure white cloud of exhaust, that embarrassed my friend to the extend that he earnestly requested I took the car out the neighbourhood. I was seen driving around the hills of Kendal for miles on the other side of the valley; not the car, just the cloud penetrating the hedgerows. It cleared after 5 mins, before I was able to return to the friends house. As to how effective it was ... it certainly creates cloud! Thanks to all who responded!. Redex is apparently alive and well somewhere in England. I remember a great mechanic, Lindy Hansen of Hansen-McPhee Motors in Bedford, Massachusetts (Route 4-25) who swore by the stuff in those days (and I l[i]oved[/i] the white smoke - beats black, anyway). Wonder if any of you hung out there on a spring Saturday morning when TC's were new! Marvel Mystery Oil may smell better, but I'd rather pour it into a Redex injector if I could find one. Austin

I have an original Redex dispenser, it is about 4 inches square, 12 inches long and appears to only really work if you had a flathead engine. Joe
