Cowl to hood Rubber Strip

Please excuse this minor "problem" I have but I would be interested in what other rebuilders have done...

I have found that the shape of the ash front top and side rails is making it very difficult for me to get the rubber strip to lay flat all around the corners. I guess I have two options: cut the rubber at the corners or try to stretch out the outside of the strip also at the corners. I would rather not have to cut into the rubber but the rubber does not seem to want to stretch enough to allow me to get the strip flat all the way around the rails. Anyone know what the factory did originally?

Rob I think you are referring to the wood/hood rubber, they cut notches into it to open it up and to keep it from puckering

Dip the rubber in a pail of hot water to stetch it. Larry

Rob I think stretching is the answer, the variable is 'how much'. I restored my TD years ago and over-stretched this rubber strip resulting in cracks and splitting after only a couple of years. So, go ahead and pull it so it lays flat in the corners, but don't go beyond that........did this on the TC and it still looks great after 12 years. Dave Osborn TC 10217 TD 6551
