Split or cotter pins

Hi Whitworth Heads, Once upon a time I was taught how to install and finish split pins for connecting rods by an English aircraft mechanic. That was thirty years ago, and I haven't had to practice that art since I finished by TC. Can anyone describe with some authority, detail and clarity the "proper" method? And is there a difference for bobbing parts like rods and rotating parts like flywheel bolts?
