I don't understand your reasoning!! If you bid the maximum that you're willing to pay for the item, and then, at the last second, someone outbids you, what are you complaining about?! Logic dictates that you weren't willing to go as high as he was for the item anyway, or you would have left a higher bid! I always bid the highest amount I'm willing to go, and let the chips fall where they may. If I get the item, that's great; but if I don't, then the idiot who outbid me paid too much for it, in my opinion. Bob
Let me tell you how ebay works. Its REALLY neat. You will find something you need for a restoration, email the seller, pin down all points, make sure (as sure as a monitor will allow) its really worth the effort. Then you bid. This may go back and forth several times between you and some other fellows. You put in a "proxy bid" with your maximum bid amount. Be sure to value it well so you will win, because you need this part. Spend the better part of a week checking the progress of the auction, Cant wait to get this needed part. 5 minutes to go, looks good. No one has even bid against you in two days.Just wait for the email that says you won with that fair bid. Make plans to go to the bank to get this fellow a cashiers check. OK, Times up and......SOME CLEVER BASTARD WITH HIGH SPEED ACCESS OUTBIDS YOU BY 2 BUCKS WITH 1 SECOND REMAINING. Auction over. You never stood a chance. NOW, Wasnt that fun? Mark TC8126

In a message dated 12/23/2001 8:44:16 PM somebody writes: <> Well, somebody needed it more than you and was willing to pay more than you for the same item. He or she probably emailed the seller a few times too. It's nice that everyone want a part at the lowest possible price but sometimes your lowest price is lower than the next guys lowest price and the seller wants to maximize his/her income so he/she can restore his/her car. Also, ALL items are won by just a few dollars over the next highest bid (or reserve). If I bid $1000 and the next highest bid was $100, I'll get the item for $105 or so. Not $1000. On the other hand if I bid $1000 and the next highest bid is $900, I'll get the item for $905 or so that time. That's the game I guess. Ron

You don't need high speed access to win either. Just like a live auction, the last bidder wins. Bob TC4956

Ah, if it were only that simple. My complaint, and this is all I'm saying, is this: This is not "highest bidding wins" in a true sense of fair play. It is indeed high speed access-or more insulting, a computer program- that jinks in with a mere second left to "outbid" by $1 and BANG, auction over, the clever win, and thats it. Laying in wait, no fair warning called; This is not an auction but a fools contest. My dispute has NOTHING to do with value; Stans post said it much better than I could. To those who say its sour grapes, thats not the point. On that note, I will close and wish all, a happy holiday. I might even throw another piece of coal in the hearth. Moving on, Regards Mark TC8126

I have won an E bay auction by putting in a bid the day before and the guy I beat out did his in the last seconds but mine was there first so I got it. Thats why it is an auction, on the other hand I have too been cocky and put a bid in 5 minutes before the end and have been beat out just like you. Joe

Another thought on the E Bay is that everything is Pacific time, so us east coasters have to be up at 3 AM for that 11PM west coast auction to end, I do not see how to get around that problem except for the secret bid process, and Ron is right I have a small collection of military aircraft clocks I have usually never seen them except once or twice at live shows, did anyone see the entire complete dash panels for a Focke- Wolf a few months ago, talk about obscure, also once a rare item goes out for a good price more show up and usually sell for less. Happy Holidays Joe

Joe, That is another great thing about eBay, the diversity of collections. Until now I never knew there were milatary aircraft clock collectots. I'll make a note of that next time I'm out and about. Merry Christmas! Bob TC4956

Mark I'm not being abrasive but if you dont like the rules dont play the game. I like the rules and have bought great items and sold many spare parts, books etc. with no problems and have made many good personal friends through eBay. Lets face it this method is to your advantage - you are clearly setting yourself a top limit price to your bids and leaving it in place - Do you want to go above that bid? It would seem not - so the eBay method stops you getting carried away and bidding $10,000 for that original K3 split pin you've always wanted! Which is a great pity as I have just such an item here in front of me Honest.....!!! Regards and Happy Xmas - Seasons greetings etc to all you guys of whatever faith etc, all over the world - Happy new year and lets hope it will be a better one this time. It sure will if I get that $10,000 Bid!! All Best Clive Oxford UK ============================================ Message text written by "Mark McCombs"
