meaning of 'MG'

I always thought it stood for Mostly Garaged.

While visiting my son's 3rd grade class to share what I do for a living, I chose to share my fun restoring MGs instead. (Especially since being a Finance Manager for a government contractor is deathly boring - even to me.) At the conclusion I asked if there were any questions. My son's best friend asked, "What does MG stand for?" I acknowledged that that was a pretty good question and asked if anyone knew the answer. Well, my son raised his hand and said, "Mechanical Garbage." I guess you know who will be walking to his senior prom. Doug Pulver TC 5850

I remember reading somewhere in the dim and distant past the disconnection of "MG" from "Morris Garages" was something to do with tax. William Morris wholly owned MG unlike the rest of his empire so I suppose that there was some tax advantage in maintaining the distance. Ian Thomson -------------
