TF seating

Can anyone help, please?

A tall (over 6ft) friend with arthritis and a TF finds it very uncomfortable to drive for more than 1hour. He wonders if bucket seats may help and if there are any available which would fit the TF, preferably without serious modification to the car so that it can be returned to original in the future if necessary.

Any help or advice will be appreciated.

I'm 6'4" tall and can happy drive my TC with no dramas. Have fitted a set of pre-war style bucket seats. These give great support but more importantly take up far less room in the cockpit and (particularly) in a TF would allow you to move further back from the steering wheel. Would think that you could gain as much as 6" in length. This may not sound much but it is in fact an awful lot of room and I am sure that it would solve your friends problem. I had my seats made at a local restorers workshop and then trimed to match the car. Bolted to the existing seat runners it allows other vertically challenged people to dive if necessary. A TF already has bucket seats. Not very comfortable and not at all adjustable. Perhaps a pair of MGB seats might work. Measure the seat width as that is the main place that space is limited.

Neil, You've missed my point. Yes a TF has bucket seats but they are quite thick. The use of the pre-war style seat (say one as fitted to a K3) will save considerable space. I was fortunate enough to have a K3 seat to use as a template whcih did make life easy for me. BTW I think you'll find that an MGB seat will take up even more room than the original TF unit. Murray

The thin-backed seats from an Austin Healy or early "modern" Midget will fit just fine, and give a bunch more legroom. I had a pair of these seats in my TC years ago while waiting to save the bucks to reupholster the original TC seats. Worked fine, were cheap at about $25 for a pair, and even resembled some of the prewar seats. Just transplant the seat-adjuster track from the T to the bottom of the AH seat (You may have to make up a plywood "adapter" panel to do this - I don't remember). What your friend might like to try, is to make a set of ramps, that fit under the seat slide assembly. The ramps need to have a flat area, with a drilled hole, for a bolt to pass through. This will secure the seat slide assembly and ramp to the floorboard. A gradual slope, with the rearward end of the slides, touching the floorboards, is what you want. The flat, raised portion is 1 3/4". The start of the slope is 1 7/8", tapering down to 1/16". Carl Cederstrand has driven a TD like this for years. He is 6'6". Malcolm Taylor wrote:
