Wedges
Joe,

Barry Morton here in CT had the same problem when he went
Datsun. He inserted reversed wedges with great success. I have
done this on my new car which is not yet on the road and will soon
do the same on my black one. Both have the Datsun box. The
black car steers fine but it could do with a bit more self centering
action. Alex Stewart has just fitted a Datsun Box and having
completed the Milligan Rally last week also found a tendency to
wander particularly with a luggage load. He is going to do the
Morton Mod.

Re: Wedges
Has anyone used the Datsun box on a TA? I use mine for rallying and am
thinking of fitting 16" wheels with 550/16 tyres at the front. I am worried
that this will cause problems with the original stearing box, ie. magnify
the play.

Regards
Brian

Wedges
I fitted a VW Beetle steering box to my TC per Bill Bollendonks
article and found that reversing the wedges to the front was
necessary.

The front axle beam's castor and camber are correct and the TC
tracked straight and true (only on a good smooth road), tho the
steering wheel had lots of play. Lots of play from a Bishop cam box
that was brand new in 1975. 20,000 miles and it became a piece of
junk!

The VW Beetle box has so little friction I had to reverse the wedges
to get the feel back into the steering wheel. The TC goes where I
point it and the VW box should last well over 150,000 miles. I agree
with Brian....."you Bishop cam boys don't know what you are
missing!"

Yea....I used to be an originalist in my early TC years ....but I got
over it!

BTW I am told this VW box dates back to the beginning of Beetle
production (at least post war) and so that makes the Beetle box
contemporary to the TC! ......and it has an arm like Goliath's ...The
original arm busted on me in 1968 just after returning from a twisty
mountain road!

I dont know about TA's and Datsun boxes. There are none that I
know of here in Cape Town. Space may be a problem. Its a tight
squeeze in the TC between the exhaust and the front engine
mount. There might also be a problem with the drop arm clearing
the engine/sump. By the way, on my black car I used a Nissan
1400 pick-up steering which seems to be identical to the old 1200
Datsun box.

Wedges
Bruce,

1. Standard Bishop Cam box - chuck wedges out.

2. Datsun steering - put wedges back thick end forward.

3. If you want original, standard steering box and thin end forward.

I've done them all in the order 3, 1, 2.

Forget the science. This is all you need to know.

Cheers
Viv

Wedges
Again, thanks for all the info. My wedges are in backwards. I'm going to
try removing them altogether first!

Re: Wedges
Hi,
I agree with Viv. I have the standard Bishop Cam box and after fitting new
shocks removed the wedges and my car steers well. The tyres are Firestone
and although narrow in appearance are fine.
I lost the sender who enquired about the MORRIS 1000 diff. so will answer
here.
The car has done a couple of long runs and goes really well. The higher
diff. doesn't have any adverse effect and when running with TDs can keep up
with them up-hill in top gear. One thing I'm trying to reconcile is the
MPH/1000 RPM. A friends TD was checked against my Beemer (he also has a
4.55/1 diff. and at 100KPH say 62.5 MPH his car was doing 4000 RPM. a week
later I followed him in my TC and at 100KPH my rev counter showed 3000 RPM
which seems very high. I have checked my rev. counter against an electronic
one and it reads fairly accurately.

Re: Wedges
hi Clem - if your tyres have the same circumference as original Dunlops,
then the 4.55 diff should give 17.84 mph/1000 rpm: 15.84(5.125/4.55) so your
revs at 62.5 mph should be almost exactly 3,500

there are so many different tyres fitted to TDs, that probably no two are
the same (tyre pressures also make a difference).

Roger:

You are so right about different tyre sizes. I have 4.3 gears in my TD with
165R15 radial tyres. I am doing about 60 MPH at 3600RPM. The rolling radius
is the thing to check. Most good 165 X 15 radials are about 813 to 820 revs
per mile. The original bias plys were about 775 revs per mile.
