Sherwood, Maybe British Wire Wheel would be the place to check on this question. As far as bicycles go, using some sort of spoke prep compound is suggested. One old trick is to use Lindseed Oil as it lubes the threads while truing and then becomes sticky so the spokes don't loosen.
