I think you would be taxing the system, especially if you are running a higher wattage bulb. I base my statement on this. During the winter, I plug my Batter Tender into the bike as soon as I roll it into the garage. It's usually cold and dark, so I've been using my electric jacket liner and gloves and high beam. When on the KLR, the red light on the Battery Tender will stay on for almost 5 minutes before the green light comes on. The KLR battery is less than a year old and is a maintfree. When I do the same on my ZRX, the green light comes on almost immediately, likewise on my W650. When I ride the KLR and do not use my electrics as much, the green light on the BT comes on much quicker. What this tells me is that the electrical system on the KLR cannot keep up with the drain. It works okay on a short commuting ride like mine (35 miles on way), but on a lengthy ride I think you would be asking for trouble. MR

I wonder if the long ride isn't easier on the battery and charging. I worry about it in traffic where I'm idling and sucking up a lot of juice while not generating much. 35 miles doesn't sound like a short commute!

Something somewhere is draining my battery. It's a new drycell battery so it should be good. I washed it down the day before, so I'm thinking water may have gotten someplace. Is there a common place this happens? I hear a clicking in the little cylanoid that the battery cables hook up to. I got a jump the other day then this morning the clicking again. That click click sound your hear, and which you probably guessed, is your starter relay complaining that you do not have enough voltage. Did you fully charge the battery before putting it into service? Although batteries can be used immediately they must be fully charged on a battery charger. Take the battery out , and stick it on a charger for 6-10 hrs.More info about the dry cell battery would be good, is it sealed or a AGM? Conall http://www.angelfire.com/co/klr650/index.html

I have 2 cars an a truck , an Six motorcycles , Really need to get down to one car or truck !! I do have hitch on my car could do without my truck !! That would make room for more cycles !! I need another KLR !!

Hello folks, Is it possible that while a bike is in an off position something is draining the battery? PS- got a Yusa maintenance free battery, added the acid, and closed it pretty quickly (dumb mistake) heard some gasses trying to escape.....did I ruin the battery? You shouldn t have much or any drain on your battery with a stock electrical system on your KLR.  Do you have any other accessories added to your electric system?  If your new battery is discharging, I d disconnect it from your bike and see if it still discharges at the same rate.   Even new batteries have been known to fail out of the box. (Yuasa not so much)  Most all lead acid batteries will self discharge and that is normal.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Self-discharge   AGM batteries also need to vent and just because it is sealed doesn t mean it can t vent.  So filling the battery and sealing it right away shouldn t effect the way the battery works.  I d let it set a little while before putting the first charge on the battery.  Acid changes the lead in your battery chemically.  The lead in your battery is porous and it takes time for acid to find it s way into all the nooks and crannies of a lead acid battery, so if you put a charge on the battery too early you may limit it s potential.  Also charging at a high amp/hour rate the first time is a bad idea.  The first charge should be at a trickle rate, less than two amps and the lower the better.   Lots of good battery info here:  https://www.yuasabatteries.com/resources/faqs/   Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com   [b]From:[/b] DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com">david zawadzki fordavidz@... Thank you Mr. Hink! Sadly today I noticed a new issue with the bike. I charged the battery and tried to crank the bike. The wires coming off the battery, the battery itself, the solenoid and the starter were getting extremely hot. Is that normal? The starter and everything getting so hot within 4-5 seconds? The starter seemed like it had a really hard time turning over as well. I checked all the wires/fuse and cleaned all connections. Could it be that the starter went bad ? Can I rebuild it or order a new one? Thanks everyone. David

NON KLR - 96 Suzuki dr350 - please don't kill me for emailing here :) I have had two KLR 650's!!!!!! Hello guys, So i took off my starter and it smelled pretty bad. I am guessing it is fried. I looked online and it seems like it is not the easiest thing to find. There are some for $70 and $200.I am not familiar with the brand names and major sites like bikebandit do not carry them. Any suggestions? Has anyone ever rebuilt it? Thanks and sorry for emailing so much.... David

The wires coming off the battery, the battery itself, the solenoid and the starter were getting extremely hot. Is that normal? The starter and everything getting so hot within 4-5 seconds? The starter seemed like it had a really hard time turning over as well. I checked all the wires/fuse and cleaned all connections. Could it be that the starter went bad ? So filling the battery and sealing it right away shouldn t effect the way the battery works. I d let it set a little while before putting the first charge on the battery. Acid changes the lead in your battery chemically. The lead in your battery is porous and it takes time for acid to find it s way into all the nooks and crannies of a lead acid battery, so if you put a charge on the battery too early you may limit it s potential. Also charging at a high amp/hour rate the first time is a bad idea. The first charge should be at a trickle rate, less than two amps and the lower the better.
