piston failure on 2007

Post by John Biccum » Wed Aug 08, 2018 11:06 am

Cracked pistons in the KLR are usually a result of detonation ("pinging") due to how lean the bike is jetted from the factory. It's not likely that the rider can hear the pinging at highway speeds, especially when wearing appropriate hearing protection. Typical place for the OEM piston to crack is in the land between two piston-ring grooves. That's where my 2002 piston cracked, at about 25K. Time for a 685 kit (with a *forged* not cast piston), sort out the jetting at the same time. From my phone, please excuse typos
