tank bags and panniers

Post by bryanonfire » Sun Mar 18, 2018 8:47 pm

I'm thinking about getting a tank bag and panniers to slightly increase my cargo capacity. Wolfman looks good and I am willing to spend top dollar for a quality product made in the USA. At present I'm looking at the Explorer Lite tank bag. That's probably a done deal unless someone has a negative review. (And yes, I know I'll need different straps for the Gen 1 and Gen 2 bikes).
Does anyone have experience with the Wolfman panniers? Photos make it look like they would be very close to where my knees are. Wolfman of course says "no problem" but there are no reviews of the panniers on their web site.
Any comments or suggestions about adding cargo capacity up front would be welcome. I've never ridden with tank mounted luggage.

tank bags and panniers

Bryant - I can't talk about panniers yet as I haven't used them, but I can chime in about my Pelican case I added to an Eagle Mike rear rack upgrade. The Pelican keeps clothing and other things nice and dry and the few times I've required more space my no-name dry bag works well.I think Wolf also makes dry duffels, you might check that out as well. I'm very happy with my setup as the improved rack gives me ample room to add a small 1.5L of gas as well for emergencies. -Larry On Sunday, March 18, 2018 9:47 PM, "bryantburke@... suspension tuning made simpler

This forum has been a hugely-supportive favorite since I first decided that I was finally grown up enough to survive bike ownership about ten years ago (age 50+). People here helped me through the steep early learning curve, purchase, outfitting, and eventual riding on quite a few continents during the four or five years it took me to put almost a hundred thousand miles on that brand new 2007. It s hard to imagine relying similarly on any of the alternative sites. Overland riding, for which the KLR was perfectly suited, was my attempt to travel as I ve always done, but at a level of comfort (and within a price range) more suited to my aging body and attitudes. Riding can be tough at times, but I found it a lot more plush than my previous world travels with a backpack. Along similar lines, most of my riding these days is on my decidedly-more-comfortable Vstrom, though I question this choice every time I wander off the main routes in search of better scenery and mild adventures. I ve also taken to full time employment again, and tend to limit my trips to three-week chunks scattered throughout the year I m writing from Vietnam, and hoping for Azerbaijan and Georgia in the fall. This means lots of rental bikes, and lots of hauling riding gear through little airports, trains and dilapidated buses. Like others here, the Facebook format doesn t really work for me. Clearly it s driving out the old-fashioned web forums not just in motorcycling, but in other areas where I ve been active, like backcountry skiing and other forms of travel. On the other hand, the sheer volume of information which is so easily available these days makes progress however objectionable I may find it inevitable. My thanks to those who ve made this forum possible and so rewarding over the years! This includes Fred, of course, but also a great many frequent contributors, some of whom probably don t think they have much of value to say. If you like it, contribute (or watch it fade away, sooner than you think)! Gotta go: a little Honda is waiting in Hoi An, and I ve got a lot of exploring to do during the next couple of weeks. Safe riding to all! Mark Sent from my iPad

tank bags and panniers

Post by SniperOne308 » Mon Mar 19, 2018 8:58 am

Hi Bryant, I used the Wolfman tank panniers on my Gen 1 with the factory tank.  I'm only 5'7" with a 31" inseam and my knees did get into the panniers.   I tended to put lighter weight and soft stuff in the tank panniers to keep weight off the front when riding technical tracks or sand.  Soft stuff on the knee side of the panniers.  If you do mostly paved and dirt roads it's not an issue. The same road/trail qualifier drove the tank bag for me.  I've used several and for road work the Wolfman Explorer was a great bag.  For trail riding I didn't want that much between my legs, so I went to the Wolfman Enduro tank bag.   I also used a fender brace and put a Wolfman Fender bag on it to hold my spare tube/tire tools. Lastly, I had the Happy Trails Nerf bars protecting the cowling/tank and Happy Trails makes a pair of nice bags that attach to the Nerf bars. Bryan

tank bags and panniers

Post by TONY HERALD » Mon Mar 19, 2018 9:24 am

I have Wolfman tank panniers.  I have used them on both my KLR and my DRZ.  I mount them forward as far as I can, no isdues.  I like them very much,  no regrets buying them.  Wolfman stuff is pricey but very well made in the USA. Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

tank bags and panniers

Post by John Biccum » Mon Mar 19, 2018 12:12 pm

I've ridden thousands of miles with Wolfman tank panniers attached to the tank of the KLR. I've used the Wolfman tank panniers on both the stock steel and aftermarket (IMS military) plastic tanks. I find them perfect as a knee rest when traveling, I'm 6' 3 inches tall and my knees just touch them when in the riding position. The nylon material is water resistant but not waterproof. I typically keep a electric vest or lightweight fleece up there on one side and my fuel and oil bottles on the other. I have also used the same tank panniers as "field expedient" *rear* panniers and they work well in that role as well. Wolfman workmanship is excellent and these panniers fit most any dual sport bike. Bryan
