question re soldering on my klr........

Post by eddie mauri » Sun Oct 01, 2017 11:02 am

I have a question concerning soldering a wire on my KLR. First, I am no mechanic, so I have no idea what I'm talking about!!!And that's why I'm asking........ My question....  "under the seat there is a (white) plastic coated wire connected to a fuse. It broke while changing the battery. I was able to reconnect the wire, but I want to solder the connection to make it more secure. I don't have a soldering iron, so I'm going to to mooch a few inches of soldering wire from the guys at work, and use my cigar lighter  (a la McGiver) to see if I can melt the soldering wire to secure the connection. Is there any reason why that is a bad idea??? I thank you all in advance. Further, someone gave me a plastic wrap tape used in electronics; when it is heated, it shrinks and makes a firm bond. So, first I am thinking of soldering the wire, and then using the shrink wrap." I guess my question is,  "is there any reason why I should not solder a copper wire with regular soldering wire\lead?"  Thanks, EddieM Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android

The end that broke comes from  opposite the battery (the end that goes to where it comes from). So, I can't just pull the fuse and take it to a shop. At this point I am going to try and find a shade tree MC mechanic. This is an easy fix, I just didn't have the tools. I did see some "el cheapo" soldering sets for about $10 on line.... Again, thanks....   <><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><>   Eddie,   Anyone that can solder wires should be able to help you out.   Maybe, until you find that person, you could use a wire nut like used in home electrical connections to securely fasten the two wires together.   Another option that I would consider a permanent fix is to use a Posilock connector.  You can probably find them in single pieces at NAPA.  I think you'll have to ask at the counter and the counterperson will have to look them up.  I think that is about 16 ga wire which you'll need to know so you get the correct size.   Remember to put the shrink wrap on before the wires get soldered.  : )   Best, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . . . . . .   ____________________________________________________________ How To Remove Eye Bags & Lip Lines Fast (Watch) Fit Mom Daily http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3142/59d24581eb83945817afest01vuc [img]https://ec.yimg.com/ec?url=https%3A%2F% ...
