Question re Soldering on my KLR........ Sun Oct 1, 2017 9:02 am (PDT) . Posted by: eddiebmauri@...?subject=Re%3A%20Question%20re%20Soldering%20on%20my%20KLR%2E%2E%2E%2E%2E%2E%2E%2E I have a question concerning soldering a wire on my KLR. First, I am no mechanic, so I have no idea what I'm talking about!!!And that's why I'm asking...... .. My question.... "under the seat there is a (white) plastic coated wire connected to a fuse. It broke while changing the battery. I was able to reconnect the wire, but I want to solder the connection to make it more secure. I don't have a soldering iron, so I'm going to to mooch a few inches of soldering wire from the guys at work, and use my cigar lighter (a la McGiver) to see if I can melt the soldering wire to secure the connection. Is there any reason why that is a bad idea??? I thank you all in advance. Further, someone gave me a plastic wrap tape used in electronics; when it is heated, it shrinks and makes a firm bond. So, first I am thinking of soldering the wire, and then using the shrink wrap." I guess my question is, "is there any reason why I should not solder a copper wire with regular soldering wire\lead? "
Thanks, EddieM

Eddie,
How about disconnecting the white wire from the battery and also from the
fuse. Then take it to work and get one of the guys that knows how to
solder to solder the new end on the wire.
Trying to use a cigarette lighter to heat the wire and new end will be
difficult at best. To properly solder, the temperature of the metal must
be raised enough to melt the solder and then the solder is added. Too
hot is about as bad as not hot enough. The metal should melt the solder
and not the heat source like a lighter.
As an added note... the white wire is the wire that supplies all the
electrics on the bike except the starter motor. If the repair fails you
will not have any power to the bike just like the main fuse failing.
