old klr 650 motor

Post by Chris Shepard » Tue Sep 26, 2017 5:50 pm

I have 2005 KLR 650 motor that had less than 5,000 miles on it. The drain plug spun out when I was riding it and something internally was damaged. I installed a new 2008 motor in the bike. Would anyone like the used damaged motor? There are a lot of good parts on it. It is free and I am located in San Diego, Ca. Otherwise I will dispose of it. Thank you. Chris Shepard chrisshepard@...

Marshall, If you can figure out a way to pick it up, it is yours.   I moved down here from Orange County and no longer have a garage to work in. I was going to rebuild it and now I just don't have the space to keep it. I was hoping someone like Eagle Mike could use it for tech days if he still does that.  It seems a waste to dispose of it. klr-ish bikes - nklr?

Taking that first sentence as it is written, my only answer for a water cooled dual sport in the price range of the KLR (new and used) would be a DRZ400. Everything seems to be a compromise based on what we intend to do with it.   Following 3 KLRs (both generations) across 25 years I moved to a big bore DRZ that compromised highway ability for more technical trails. Now the DRZ is gone and I have a seriously modified XR650L, that for me is a better compromise.  350 pounds, 50 hp, and I like the symplicity when I'm a long way from civilization.  Randy Sent from my Verizon 4G LTE smartphone -------- Original message -------- From: "RJTaylor@... Except perhaps the Yamaha XT660 (about $2K more actually).     But I don't believe that is sold in the US.   The DL650 is 1 size larger that the KLR and not really "dual sport" unless you get the new Adventure model.  Then you're in the Africa Twin price range,.  Other bikes (Suzuki, Honda) are air cooled and more dirt oriented.  European makes are out of my price range.  The Africa twin is as well but I might keep an eye out for a used one in a couple years. The only other bike I'd consider new other than the KLR is the Yamaha if I could get one.  I have a DL650 but is used  differently.
